first (very) rough draft of probably many to come

Hi everybody, thank you so much for your help in getting me this far. I am starting to get a rough draft of my itinerary and would like your thoughts. I am flying into Munich, arriving Sept. 7 in the AM. We'll train to our (as yet undecided hotel) and sleep there 3 OR 4 nights. Then take an early train to Prien, stow bags in a locker and visit the Herrenchiemsee palace on our way to Berchtesgaden. (Thank you to another poster for suggesting that)

We would sleep 3 nights in B-gaden, day tripping to Salzburg, Eagle's Nest, and perhaps Lake Konigsee. Would I need another night here?

Then MAYBE rent a car when leaving B-gaden, and heading west to see Oberammergau, Linderhof, Mittenwald, Wieskirche, the Zugspitze, and the castles. (Maybe 3 nights?) Where to sleep??

From there, we would head north, either with the car, or on the train. We would arrive sometime in the afternoon and stay in Rothenburg for 2 nights.

From there, we would head to Boppard on the Rhine for the final stretch. (Maybe stopping in Wurzburg for a short visit if time permits?) I picked Boppard because of the fireworks show on the 23rd. We would spend our time (4 nights?) on the Rhine checking out the towns and castles. Our plane leaves from Frankfurt on the 24th.

I am sure there is plenty wrong with this and that is why I am coming here for advice. What are your thoughts?

Also, if we DO decide to do the car rental, WHERE would I pick it up? Is there a huge surcharge for dropping it off somewhere different than from where I picked it up?

The car rental return surcharge comes in when dropping off at another country than your pick up country.

It looks like you have a nice amount of time for this trip.

Munich 3-4
B'gaden Alps 3
Alps to west 3
Rothenburg 2
Boppard 4

I see nothing "wrong" with your plans, maybe an overemphasis on the Alps with your 6 nights there, and an excessive amount of time in palaces/castles (Herrenchiemsee + Linderhof + "the castles" N'stein and H'schwangau?? Then the real castles on the Rhine as well...) Also, Franconia (region of Bavaria around Nuremberg) deserves another couple days. I'd probably subtract some palaces and Alp-towns, swapping 2 nights from the Alps for 2 more nights in Franconia, a very charming place IMO. Wuerzburg is just one choice there...

Sommerhausen, Ochsenfurt and Marktbreit, just outside W'burg

Bamberg, less than 1 hour from W'burg

Iphofen, also near W'burg

The Freilandmuseum in Bad Windsheim

You may do just fine with 3 nights in Munich and 3 nights on the Rhine... just depends on how much/little you plan to undertake in those places. But keep the Rhine at 4 if you want a day on the Mosel (Cochem?)

It seems to me the car, if you want one, would be most handy for a Prien - B'gaden - Mittenwald sort of loop. You might rent/drop in some combination of Munich, Rosenheim, or Augsburg. Neither the Rhine nor Franconia requires a car for day trips, nor do you need one to get to either region from the south; keeping the car for these areas to the north would mean too much car time for my preferences. For the Franconian towns as well as for Rothenburg, Wuerzburg would be a great rail base for Franconia.

Overall it is not too rushed. Seeing all the kings castles are amazing. The huge surcharges are for international drop off.

Thank you. I am now booked for Munich and emailing places in Berchtesgaden. My first choice had no openings so I am on to Plan B. Waiting to see what they say.

I will have 4 full days in Boppard. Can I see all the usual things, a few of the little towns and castles, PLUS squeeze in a day to the Mosel and Burg Eltz?

Probably less than 4... With your plan, you'd wake up on the 20th in Rothenburg and drive to Boppard, possibly stopping in Würzburg (a worthwhile place IMO.) The drive alone takes 3+ hours without stopping so maybe that leaves half a day at the most. Then 3 more, right? Then you travel to FRA on the 24th. 4 nights would be better, but even 3+ is a nice amount of time altogether, and I'm sure you'll enjoy yourselves. One day for Eltz and "the Mosel" won't cover Trier, Bernkastel and Cochem, the top 3 destinations on the 200+ km Mosel. But Cochem and Eltz... yes, that works. Likewise, 2+ days on the Rhine will be adequate to see/do a good bit. But I suspect that once you get to this area, you'll see why the Dutch and vacationing Germans themselves often spend weeks at a time here.

Boppard will be very busy that weekend - it and the following weekend represent Boppard's biggest moments of the year . I would caution you to book there promptly.
