First time leaving from Frankfurt airport to our destination- need some help

We are trying to get to Strasbourg France to start a hiking tour. Our FF miles would only allow us to get to Frankfurt. We plan to take the airport train to the main train station and buy our tickets to Strasbourg. Advise is so welcomed.

I checked on line and it looks like it's only a couple of hours from Frankfurt to Strasbourg (about the same as from Paris)

1....Is there a fast train, and should we make advance reservations to save some money, and make sure we have a seat?

2......Also, need help with a hotel for one night on our return before our flight home. Would it be best to stay near the airport, or enjoy Frankfurt for 1/2 a day? Our flight home is around 10AM. Recommendations for a hotel is appreciated as well.

Hi,

On #1: I would take the ICE train Frankfurt Hbf to Offenburg. Change there to the S-Bahn to Strasbourg, which ca 30 mins or so.

That is the connection recommended on the Bahn schedule site. It will take a little over 2 hours.

As for #2, staying at the airport might be more convenient, but you will have difficulty getting around with only one arm and one leg. You can probably find a more reasonable accommodation at one end of the S-Bahn line that runs between Frankfurt and Mainz. I'm sure some people will suggest places in Frankfurt. I don't know about them; I stayed here, across the plaza from the bahnhof in Mainz, in 2008, and found it confortable, cost effective, and convenient.

Do not go to the Central Station - trains to Offenburg (Basel) leave from the airport ("Fernbahnhof"). To save money, book your ticket well in advance (possible 90 days before travelling) at the DB website (www.bahn.de/en) and print out your ticket at home.

The problem with that suggestion is that if your flight is delayed, that cheap train ticket becomes worthless if you miss the train it is for.

There is also the Lufthansa bus to Strasbourg.
