First planning stages

Sorry for the jumble of thoughts. Just beginning to plan for fall 2026, 2 adults and 14yo. We plan to have about 10-12 days in Germany and must travel between September 15 and October 15. We realize it's Oktoberfest and Cannstatter Volksfest but hope to avoid the bigger cities and worst of the crowds. Highlights must include EuroPark and Neuschwanstein. Just wondering what would be the best city to fly in/out (coming from Canada) and would a car rental be better (or cheaper?) than trying to navigate trains to explore the Bavaria region?

That's a big "it depends" for both of your questions. Europark and N'stein, with no other details is just too vague. If you supply a tentative itinerary, people can be more helpful. Generally, unless travelling to remote rural areas, travel by train can be easier and cheaper than renting a car, including in Bavaria. Again it can depend on exactly where you are going, as well as time restrictions.

Where in Canada are you starting? I guess most planes should go to Frankfurt, maybe Munich. Both should work for your plan.
Here is a quick draft
Possibly Frankfurt - Munich area
Munich area - Fussen
Fussen - lake Constance / Upper Swabian
LC / US - Freiburg area / Black Forest
Freiburg / BF - Frankfurt

Trains are generally going to work just fine, but for three people a car might be cheaper, unless you go for slower regional trains only. A smaller car should run at about 600-700 Canadian dollars, 400-500€ (looking at tuicars.de, who provide special rates with various car companies)
Oktoberfest and Cannstatt are only impacting the close proximity, beyond that should be fine.

What are you interested in, generally speaking? Towns, culture, museums, spas, hiking, cars, history? What’s your teen into?

Trans are easy to use. Octoberfest, etc. just affect immediate area
