We are considering a day trip to Kronach from Bamberg in April. We specifically would like to visit the Fortress (Festung Rosenberg) and the Fränksiche Galerie in the castle. I have read the websites and done a bit of research. There are guided tours of the castle that I would rather not take. Does anyone know if you can visit the castle grounds without a tour? I did not answer your post right away, because I have never been there, but since no one else has contributed, I guess I'll offer my 2 cents worth. After reading the website, I must conclude that the only access to the castle is via a guided tour.
But what a great castle. It's obviously of a late design - a five-star design similar to Fort Pitt in Pittsburgh. It was designed to withstand canon attacks.

Thanks for replying Lee. You are correct. I emailed the tourist office in Kronach. They confirmed that I could not visit even the grounds of the fortress without taking the tour. Plus, they informed me that the museum would be closed for construction. I will probably save this for some future trip.
