Hello, techtrainer. Your hotels are pretty specific. Hopefully, someone who has stayed at one of these hotels will find your thread. If no answers, though, I've found booking.com to be a great place to read reviews... all the reviews are done by people who actually stayed at the hotel, so pretty reliable, I think. Good luck in sorting out housing for your trip!

Why are are you choosing Lichtenberg as the area to stay in? Can't help you here. I have not stayed in any of these listed.

In Berlin I stay in one of 3 places depending on the availability or the rate, Berlin Hbf, Ostbahnhof, or Charlottenburg. This time in Berlin I stayed in hotels in all 3 places.

Limited time this morning but I’ll say something about your Berlin choice location. It is a good location for exploring Potsdam, its palaces and lakes. We have been in this area several times to visit but haven’t stayed in a hotel here but have stayed with friends nearly this far out. It is a bit of a ride to get into the heart of Berlin to explore but doable. You don’t say how long you are in Germany but there is a 49€ D ticket that covers buses, trams, S/U bahns and regional trains that would make transportation seamless for you if you are in Germany for a couple of weeks or more. Research the Deutschland Ticket in the search function on this forum.

More later as I’m driving friends to the airport this AM.

Actually, your Berlin choice puts you to the east of the city, not the west near Potsdam.

I don't know anything about the hotel, but f you want to explore the east part of the city, that's a good location if a little far out of the center of the city. Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichshain are pretty happening, if you're into nightlife/hip shops & restaurants/street art. Looks like there's a tram stop right across the street and S-Landsberger Allee just a few steps beyond that, so you're well connected to see the rest of the city.

How good the location is really depends on what you want to do. You can get just about anywhere on public transport, but Berlin is very spread out so getting where you want to go - depending on where that is - could take some time.

Thanks everyone

Actually, I have no idea of Berlin - so don't know what is a good central area to stay in.

Had just found this hotel and booked it, but did not know that Lichtenberg is pretty far out :

Vienna House by Wyndham Andel's Berlin
Landsberger Allee 106, Lichtenberg, 10369 Berlin, German<<

So question for all -
- what is a good area in Berlin that is central ?
- can you recommend hotels close to public transport ?

I am a Motel One fan and they usually have them in good locations. Have stayed in them in both Berlin and in Munich.

Look at booking dot com to see where hotels are located. You don't have to book with them, just see where they are in comparison to where you are going and what you want to see.

Do you know how to use Google Maps? It is very easy to see where your hotel is located relative to the things you want to see and or the center of the city. You can also get directions to things you want to see on Google maps via walking or transport, and it will tell you how long it should take.

If you zoom in a bit on the map, there are icons that indicate tram stops, bus stops, and S- or U-Bahn stops.
Transit stops are plentiful in Berlin. It's unlikely that any hotel you choose in the city will be more than a block or two from a transit stop.

Figure out what you want to see first. If you're dying to see Potsdam and spend a couple of days there, you wouldn't relocate to the city center from the hotel you've already chosen.

Here is Rick's suggested itineraries for Berlin, to give you a starting point: https://www.ricksteves.com/europe/germany/berlin-itinerary

Thank you all - appreciate your taking the time to help.
I cancelled Vienna House in Lichtenberg and found a hotel in Mitte area:

Hotel AMANO Grand Central
Heidestrasse 62, Mitte, 10557 Berlin, Germany

I suggest the immediate area around Berlin Hbf, a hub for the buses, several lines stop there, and the U and S-Bahn. There is a Motel One there too ca. 2 mins from the Hbf itself, the Ibis is opposite from the station.

In terms of access to public transport, it's ideal, basically a junction point. I stayed in this Ibis last summer and on this trip too.

You can take the U-Bahn inside Berlin Hbf to the Brandenburg Gate,

The Hotel AMANO Grand Central pretty close to the train station, so you should be good there. I don't know that hotel. I've stayed at the Motel One in that area, which is a bit closer to the station, but the location is good.

Regarding Hamburg, I'm not familiar with your hotel there, but you should know that location is about a 30 minute walk from the train station. That might be fine and you could certainly get a cab or take a bus there, but just an FYI.

Hi Mardee - Thank you so much on Hamburg.

I changed my hotel to
Steigenberger Hotel Hamburg, Heiligengeistbrücke 4, 20459 Hamburg, Germany
This seems much better located.

Hi Fred - Thanks for your tips -- I have been searching for motel one everywhere -- but they are all booked. Seems they are very popular.

@ techtrainer61....The Motel One chain is usually located near train station or big subway station hubs, ie Berlin Alexanderplatz and Hbf, likewise in Vienna at Wien Hbf and Westbahnhof. Near Bahnhof Zoo in Berlin are two Motel One hotels.

If you're considering Steigenberger Hotel (can be pricey but well worth it) in Berlin, it's behind the InterCity Hotel near Berlin Hbf. Take the Washington exit from Berlin Hbf.
