Feedback on RS Tour Berlin Hotel

Does anyone from prior RS tours have any feedback on the Hotel Kastanienhof in Berlin? We are scheduled for the Berlin, Prague and Vienna tour in late September 2024. It looks like a great location. Should I be concerned that there is no A/C at this time of the year? We are there for 4 nights, so want to be sure we will be comfortable and well situated. Thank you!!

I took RS B,P&V tour this June. But I can’t help you with the hotel. We stayed at Meyer’s Hotel which was nice. I don’t remember using a/c at any of the tour hotels. Not until I moved to my post-tour Vienna hotel and then only for a couple hours in the evening. Some days were in the mid-80’s but it cooled down at night.

You will love the tour. It is intense because of the history of the region but very interesting. The Bundestag/Reichstag in Berlin is worth a free time visit but you need to plan ahead. Apply for tickets as soon as dates/times open up a few months ahead of your date.

Here’s my trip report if you’re interested https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/trip-reports/give-me-time-to-post-multi-segment-report

No a/c should be no problem in Berlin at that time of year. I was in Berlin late August/early Sept 2-3 years ago at a hotel without a/c and was very comfortable.

Sept. 22-24 is Marathon weekend. You will not get priceworthy accomodation for that dates.

End of September shall be OK without A/C if we do not get a sahara heat wave (no joke) that might provide warm temps around 20 C at night.

Location of hotel is OK, it is a tourist street.
For lower noise level ask hotel for that room or try to get rooms to backside because tram on street can be noisy; also warmer evenings can become louder on street side.

Have a good stay.

Thank you both for your feedback. I really appreciate it!

If you have any other advice or feedback specific to the Berlin, Prague, Vienna tour itself, please let me know. We are a little nervous about the Berlin segment and being able to traverse a large city but we are really interested in the history.

Central Berlin is actually rather compact, and mass transit is efficient and easy to understand, so you shouldn't be concerned over getting around.

We stayed at Kastanienhof early Ocotber pre-Covid [but not on RS tour] and there was no need for air conditioning. It was quite comfortable and served an excellent breakfast. It's in a gentrified residential neighborhood. The tram which stops right outside makes it easy to connect to the S-Bahn just a short ride away.

Thank you very much for your feedback…I am feeling good about the hotel now. We are seasoned travelers but have never been to Berlin and wanted to be sure we were well situated. We are really looking forward to the trip now…wish it was this Fall instead of 2024! Happy traveling everyone and thanks for sharing. I really love these forums and how people are so good about sharing their experiences.

Berlin is wonderful and pretty easy to get around in. And your hotel is in a great location! In fact, it's just a little north of where I stayed last year. A lot of the sights are in that area and there is great public transportation around as well. Plus you are also near a SammyS Berliner Donuts shop! They seriously make the best donuts I have ever had. Do yourself a favor and try one. :)

When I was there, I kept an online journal (technically a blog but no ads or affiliate links) about my stay in Germany. Here's a link to the first full day in Berlin if you want to check it out. I was there for 4 nights and then 2 nights at the end of my trip. https://mostlytraveled.wordpress.com/2022/04/30/day-3-first-day-in-berlin/
