Feedback on our trip and suggestions for a fourth area

Hey RS forum!

We are planning a 14 night trip in late October for our honeymoon, looking for some feedback on a fourth area to stay. My fiancee and I are planning on flying into Munich, renting a car and going to Salzburg for 4 nights. Then 3 nights in Rothenburg ob der Tauber or its surrounding area, followed by 4 nights in Alsace, likely Colmar. After that Im leaning towards 3 nights in Mosel River Valley, maybe St Goat or Cochem, but also considering Black Forest (Baden Baden) and am open to any other suggestions on our fourth base. We will fly home out of Frankfurt. Any suggestions or feedback would be appreciated.

BadenBaden is so underwhelming in my opinion. Salzburg is lovely. Heidelberg is also a great town.

Ty both!

Salzburg is incredible, we spent 24 hrs there last year and i cant wait to have more time with the area.

Ive heard Heidelberg is great, i will look into that option too

Also now Wondering if RodT is a good place to stay or if i should consider Nordlingen or Dinkulsbuhl instead.

Best wishes for a nice stay.

St. Goar is a Rhine River town.

If you want to stay in Rothenburg and visit Dinkelsbuehl, that's a snap with a car.

I assume 4 nights in Salzburg will include some side trips. You might want 5 or 5+ there if you'll be visiting Hallstatt, Berchtesgaden, Werfen (Eisriesenwelt ice cave, Hohenwerfen Castle and falconry show) and Herrenchiemsee Palace (between Munich and Salzburg.)

With flights into MUC and out of FRA, and your goal of staying in Rothenburg, the Alsace looks to me like an almost-unnecessary detour. Just north of Rothenburg is a vast wine country that is loaded with wonderful villages not unlike those in the Alsace.

I think you would enjoy tooling around to see some of these places...

Prichsenstadt
Miltenberg
Michelstadt
Iphofen
Sommerhausen
Marktbreit
Ochsenfurt

Bamberg, one of Germany's best-preserved medieval towns, is here too.

Since this area is on your route toward the Rhine/Mosel region, it would be a fine way to streamline your itinerary.

You have planned a beautiful honeymoon. A little tweaking of your plans will make it even better.
We loved all you the different locations you listed with one exception- Colmar! We were sorry we wasted our time in this over touristed town.

Instead of Colmar, spend several nights in one of the Wine Villages near Strasbourg. We loved staying in Riquewehr!

Ty all!! Def now considering dropping Alsace for another stop in Germany. We missed Bamberg on our last trip so that comes to mind as a replacement; i will look into those other towns you all mentioned I really appreciate the feedback

So we are dropping Colmar, and replacing with either Heidelberg or somewhere around Bamberg. And instead of Cochem i am thinking we spend the last leg of the trip at the castle at Oberwesel - thoughts?

Since you will be in the general area, Heidelberg, Rothenburg, and Wurzburg are all very close together. Check them out on a map and you'll see you can base in one, and day trip to the others.

Please consider not driving as soon as you arrive in Munich. Driving while jet lagged is, in my opinion, driving impaired. Personally, I'm not allowed around sharp instruments after such a long flight. Even a minor fender bender at the start of the trip will put a damper on the honeymoon.

Love long and prosper.

So we are dropping Colmar, and replacing with either Heidelberg or somewhere around Bamberg.

If you're looking for somewhere "cozy", Heidelberg is a pretty big place - like 160,000+ population. Würzburg is nearly that size as well. Near Heidelberg and much cozier:

Michelstadt

Bad Wimpfen on the Neckar River (named Germany's most beautiful old town just last year)

The "Bergstrassse" towns just north of Heidelberg. I especially liked Heppenheim.

Auf Schönburg in Oberwesel is a special place. A night or two would be right for this occasion. 3 nights...?? I'd suggest spending your final night closer to the airport. Mainz is a good place. I'd drop the car there and catch one of the many direct trains to the airport terminal (20 minutes, just a few Euros.)

I also endorse the idea of NOT driving - especially all the way to Salzburg - after an overnight flight. Pick up at the airport if you must, but drive to somewhere nearby (Freising, or one of the other many choices near the airport) and chill your engines there. You'll have a better chance at carrying out a safe trip the next morning after you've rested up.

Bodensee. It's absolutely the best place to spend 4-5 days, and falls in line with your thinking about Colmar. Better than Colmar, better than the Mosel (which I love), and easy to get to and from. Stay at the Steigenberger on the north shore. You have Austria, Switzerland, and Germany all right there.

The castle at Meersburg, Mainau, the Rhine Falls, the cable car into the Austrian Alps at Dornbirn, Lindau, Zeppelin rides over the lake, ferry rides across it; there's a reason is so popular with the Europeans.

You have 14 days and need to plan carefully, since your proposed options involve quite a lot of travel between locations.
You are flying into Munich, but not visiting that city?
Since you plan to visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber, consider taking the Romantic Road from Fussen to that city.
The road is loaded with smaller cities and medieval walled towns. Consider spending half a day in Augsburg (2000 years old) as well as some of those towns.

Alsace, is great, it is on the border with the Black Forest. Skip Baden-Baden, visit Triberg. Also, visit Strasbourg, France as well as Colmar.
Also, visit Trier, the oldest city in Germany (one a regional capital of the Roman Empire).

Bodensee (Lake Constance) can be an absolute pleasure at this time, for the reasons KCG mentioned. Just check if it fits in your overall trip plan - it is a bit of the road from Franconia to Alsace. Not too much, but noticeably.
If you do not mind the suggestion, consider replacing Rothenburg with Meersburg on the Lake and go south from Munich instead of north, and do Heidelberg just before you leave in Frankfurt, it is effectively on the way from Alsace.

Amazing feedback. Thank you.

We are now thinking 4 nights Salzburg, 3 nights RodT, 4 nights TBD and final 4 nights in either Rhine (Oberwesel) or Mosel areas (Bernkastel).

Now considering Bodensee as well as previously mentioned Heidelberg/Neckar Valley for that third stop. A lot to think about

Bodensee has been added to the list. We spent two weeks here last September and had a lovely time: https://www.haus-sonnenseite.de/ We had the 7 day Bodensee Pass and made full use of it.

After, not for the first time, we spent another few weeks in the Bavarian Alps going east. We think we are done with that general area now. The alps has the scenery, obviously, but the villages and towns in Franconia as a whole are more interesting and attractive by my lights.

I love the Mosel, and Alsace should not be dropped so easily. There are so many good options, which is a bit of a conundrum.

What an amazing community this is.

Want to update everyone bc the feedback has been so good.

We will stay first night in Munich. Then off to Salzburg for 3 nights. Then Bodensee for 4 nights. Rothenburg for 3 nights. End with Oberwesel/Schonberg for 4 nights and fly out of Frankfurt.

For Bodensee, is Meersburg a good choice to stay? And any suggestions on centrally located hotels in Salzburg?

Thank you !!!

Meersburg is a good spot. Make sure you have parking and an Echt Card provided by your accommodations.

Check out this site https://www.bodensee.eu/en and see if the Bodensee Pass is worth it for you.

Suggest Lindau, Insel Mainau, Kontstanz, Salem, Sigmaringen, walk to Hagnau. Not fussed about Friedrichshafen.

Friends of our stayed here in Salzburg: https://amadeohotel.at/ It's not exactly central but it does have parking, and it's easy to get in and out of.

A couple of random points:

Mainau and a lake cruise (can be combined) would be a top idea for a honeymoon, and my clear recommendation (we had one).
Lots of towns have spas, should you be interested in that, and it is a nice option if it rains.
Friedrichshafen was heavily bombed - go there only if you should be into Zeppelins, and then do the museum.
The town of Überlingen is nice as well - mostly medieval, long walkway along the lakeshore, spa and botanical garden.
The small town of Unteruhldingen („Pfahlbauten“ in German) has a museum for a Neolithic lake town entirely on poles in the lake - should one of you too be interested in that.
Salem has a park with Moroccan monkeys, where you can feed them with sugarfree popcorn.
If you like cider or wine, both are newly produced at that time (still cloudy, little alcohol). Traditionally served with an onion cake similar to quiche Lorraine.
