Feedback on Itinerary for 3 1/2 Days in Munich in December

I was hoping to get a little feedback on a tentative itinerary that I have put together. My husband and I are in our early 30s and are pretty active (for reference). I have already checked that all of the locations are open on these days. We plan to get the mehrtagesticket since we are going to at least 2 of the locations that it covers.

Dec 17th (Thurs):

  • Arrive at noon (per Rick's suggestion, we are going to try to adjust to the time change by getting out and about instead of going to bed)
  • PM: Alte Pinakothek and Neue Pinakothek

Dec 18th (Fri):

  • AM: Munich City Walk
  • PM: Residenz Museum and Treasury

Dec 19th (Sat):

  • AM-early afternoon: Dachau
  • PM: Christmas markets

Dec 20th (Sun):

  • AM: Nymphenberg Palace
  • Afternoon train to Salzburg

We will not have a car, so we will be relying on public transportation. I think we should get a Munich Gesamtmetz partner day pass for our first day, the Partner-Tageskart for our second and last day and the Partner-Tageskart XXL for the day we go to Dachau. Let me know if that makes sense or if there is something better. FYI-- we are staying not too far west of the Oktoberfest grounds.

I would really like to see Neuschwanstein Castle also, but I am not sure it is worth cutting something else out from above, so give me your opinion on that too.

Finally, if you are replying anyway, please just add in your favorite restaurant(s).

Check regularly on the situation of the train connection (e.g. on www.bahn.de; English-language button) to Salzburg. Due to the refugee crisis this train connection might be disrupted at the time you're there.
By the way, I wouldn't trade in any of your visits for Neuschwanstein. Opinion on the worth of Neuschwanstein differ widely, but a serious consideration is that it would take out a large portion of your limited time in München.

We have been to the Christmas Markets in Munich several times in the past five years -- Nuremburg too. There is a lot (A LOT!) to see and do in the Christmas Market area alone and I think you ought to focus on that as your first goal. There are many markets to visit and, in my experience, scheduling just one afternoon will not get you through them all. If I may suggest -- forget a rigid schedule, visit the markets as your first priority and then catch in-town tourist sights if time remains to do so. I think you will be asking for some frustration by trying to include a tourist-type visit to Munich with a Christmas Market visit.
