We will be in the Munich area with another couple for 5 days at the end of March. We would like to stay in a "rural" area, preferably a farmstay or a very small family run hotel within relatively close proximity to the Munich airport. Not having much luck. The few we have found are booked. Any suggestions would be much appreciated :)

Many places are not listed on commercial booking-engine websites but on local town/tourist websites. Erding is near the airport - its farmhouse options are listed in with all the other options:

You want to search geographically. So maybe you can locate farmhouse stays by googling nearby town names to find their tourism (Tourismus in German) pages. Some will have English pages. Some not. "Hof" or "Bauernhof" indicate "farm" and are words to look for once you find accommodations (Unterkunft) listings. Then you can google the farmstay names and addresses for more info, or just write them an email inquiry to ask them for more information about their farm stay.

Thanks for asking this question and thanks to Russ for the information about the Farm Stay houses. We will be near Munich in September so I have bookmarked these also to have to plan.
