We are visiting Germany next summer and would love to stay at a farm with our two children (ages 11 and 13). Does anyone have specific recommendations for this type of lodging? It would need to be near enough to a city central to allow for transportation, since we will not have a car. Would love one that allows the kids to participate in activities/work around the farm. Thank you
I’m not sure how close you want to get to the city centre, but I doubt that you’re going to get that close staying on a farm. That said, there will probably be buses that you could take.
I don’t know any off the top of my head, but depending on where you want to stay, your best bet is to go to the city and town websites. Just about everyone will have some kind of tourism page with listings of B&Bs and houses and places to rent for lodging.
If you give me some idea of what part of the country you want to be in, I can help you look for something.
We would like to be in the southern part of Germany and plan to be staying in several places within Bavaria and Black Forest regions. We would be fine taking a bus. Thanks for your feedback.

The Black Forest offers numerous farm stay options, some of them on/near the popular and very scenic Black Forest Railway route between Offenburg and Lake Constance. The map below shows the route but not all stops on the route:

This page, provided by blogger "Bavaria Ben", is no longer active but does contain the names of many farm accommodations in this area. You could do some googling to check out their current offerings.

I once stayed at the Schönerhof in Steinach which Ben describes briefly in his brief 2017 report near the top of the page. (I actually recommended this place to Ben prior to his visit.) His link isn't working - but here's a link with description and booking information:

Steinach is extremely tiny - but it has its own train station just a few minutes on foot from the Schöner Farm, and there's a grocery store near the station, a couple of places to eat, a public swimming pool, not much more. For a few days we had a fine time there doing outings by train to other places along the Black Forest Railway... it's a short ride to the somewhat larger villages of Haslach, Gengenbach, etc. Accommodations were basic and inexpensive, and the views from the deck at the rear were super.
The Vogtsbauernhof open-air museum is closeby - with its own train station as well - and a very fine place for getting educated on traditional life in the Black Forest:
A summer bobsled run is there as well:
I should also mention the KONUS card here. All our outings by train from Steinach were covered by this guest ticket, which comes free of charge once you have checked in to accommodations in Steinach or in 100+ other Black Forest towns:
