Family Trip To Bavaria in July

Hello,
We have about 3 days to spend in Bavaria this July with our young children ages 6, 3 and 3 months. We are looking for off the beaten path gems in driving distance from Fussen. We found lovely Eisenberg, but the Hotel Christine is booked for our dates. Any other small town or family/pension recommendations that are similar? Thank you!

One of my favorite towns in all of Germany is Bamberg in northern Bavaria. It's a charming town a bit off the beaten path because most people visit Munich in southern Bavaria. However, I believe Fussen is also in the south of Bavaria, so a drive to Bamberg would probably be three hours.

With that in mind, Bamberg offers great history and culture: ETA Hoffman Museum, beautiful palace, church with Tilman Riemenschneider altar and famed Bamberg Reiter statue, beer-brewing museum, medieval buildings, multiple rivers and bicycling.

Heads up: Be aware of ticks off the beaten path in the nature.

I totally agree that Bamberg is a beautiful, well preserved small city to visit. Very little tourist traffic, great food and has (had?) more breweries than any other city. Though not in July, they also have a wonderful, uncrowded Kristkindl Markt.

How many hours driving each way from Füssen with the kids in the car?

Two off topic questions for Julia - and welcome to the Forums, Julia - do you know about the IDP requirement to drive in Germany, and do you know about the child/baby seat requirements? I don't think you'll find many cars with a wide enough back seat for 2 child seats and an adult, assuming that one is in the front seat...... probably the same issues you have at home.

Thanks all for these suggestions. Nigel, thanks for pointing out the international driver’s permit and car seats. We plan to get the permit at home through our local automobile association. As for the car seats, at home we fit three across in one row in the back seat. Our oldest goes in a booster in the middle. Hoping we can do the same in a rental. We requested a large SUV, but maybe we need a minivan?

Bamberg looks beautiful, but I think we want to stay further south between Munich and Fussen.

Not exactly between Munich and Füssen, but nearby, is the really nice ancient town of Augsburg. I like it a lot, and others here do too. I might worry, since it has a number of tram lines, how the kiddoes would do crossing the road with tram tracks and trams fairly frequently?

Are you bringing your own seats? In EU they must be ISO-Fix compatible as that's the method for safe attachment here.

Try the Landhotel Schwarzenbach just north of Fussen.

I visit Augsburg when I am staying near Munich. So unfortunately i don't have a particular hotel to recommend. Sorry

Really nice city.

We visited Augsburg for two days this spring. It was our third visit and we like the town. Augsburg is the third largest city in Bavaria, not what I would think of as off the beaten path. I am not sure about sights for kids. I am sure you could find parks and playgrounds.

We stayed at the Ibis beim Königplatz. It was a minimalist room with a good cafeteria style breakfast. There is a nearby parking garage but we arrived by train. I am not sure how they would accommodate a 4+ family.
