In Munich for 5 days after Christmas, any suggestions on a hotel for a family of 4, kids 20,22, near the center of town that will not be high priced? Going to Salzburg on New Years day for a few days any hotel suggestions there? Lastly was thinking of doing a day trip to Berchtesgaden from Salzburg, given that it is winter is that a good or not so good idea? Many thanks.
We've stayed twice at Pension Lindner and really enjoyed it. Very central and a good value with a great breakfast included. You would need to get two rooms, since the largest room they have is a triple.
In Munich I have used both the Aloft and the Marriott Courtyard in the past. Both are just south of the main train station and ideally located to the city center. My favorite place to stay for years was a pension off Oskar von Muller but it's gone now.
In Salzburg I highly recommend the Boutiquehotel am Dom. It's modern, very clean, excellent staff, and you cannot beat the location.
If your kids are in their 20's I highly recommend they get their own room. Both cities have a large student population and good nightlife.
For Salzburg, we have twice stayed at Hotel Garni Sallerhof in Grödig. It a wonderful small town very close to Salzubrg and on the highway to Berchtesgaden. Down the street is a chocolate factory. At the time we were there they did not have tours of the factory, but the store is wonderful. We purchased bags of treats at outlet prices.
If you don't have a car, the local bus picks up very close to the hotel. The family is very friendly and the breakfast is wonderful.
Get two rooms at Motel One. It’s a local budget chain with many locations in Munich. The Sendlinger Tor location is close to the city center.

Agree with DJ. We stayed at another Munich Motel One last year - Motel One München-Deutsches Museum. It has easy access to the Museum & close to our favorite restaurant - Wirtshaus in der Au, in addition to the Viktualienmarkt,
We stayed at hotel Antares in Munich. It is walking distance to Odeonplatz and Hofgarten.
I'm a big fan of the Motel One chain, however the rooms only have one bed. I doubt that kids age 20 and 22 would want to share a bed.
If you are looking for accommodation for a family of 4 at a reasonable price, do what most Germans and Austrians do and rent an apartment. Vacation rentals are often available even if you stay for only a few days and not a full week.
There is AirBnB but also the official tourism websites of the respective cities:

In Salzburg, I stayed with my two 21 yr old daughters in a family room at Hotel Hohenstauffen. It is very reasonable and clean with a tremendous breakfast included in the rate. It is close to the train station with an easy walk to the old town. In Munich, I was traveling with my two college aged sons. We had a family room at Hotel Uhland. It is a small, family run inn, very clean and spacious with a lovely included breakfast. I like inns/hotels with local charm. Both these hotels fit the bill.
We got a large room (junior suite) for 4 of us in 2009 at the Bergland Hotel in Salzburg. It is across the river from the old city but handy enough for our purposes. Breakfast and staff were both very good.
