My wife and I are traveling to Bavaria next week. We're doing three days each in Munich, Salzburg and Füssen. We had planned to visit family in Altenburg but unfortunately those plans have fallen through. So any suggestions on where to spend a few days before we fly home?
Do you have a particular focus or set of interests? Outdoor activities? Certain periods of history? Regional cuisines? Wine? Bavaria is a huge place of much variety, so where to send you should depend on your personal tastes.
We were thinking a like a gondola ride up a mountain or a luge down one also food is always a good idea.
On our way from Fussen to Munich last month, we stopped in Oberammergau for the afternoon. They have a nice chairlift and fun alpine coaster. That drive made me wish we spent more time in the area, particularly Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Lush green hills on the footsteps of the mountains. Never really experienced something like that before. Not sure if visiting there is part of your plan while you're in Fussen.
Assuming you're flying out of Munich, something north by train would make sense. Maybe Nuremburg.
These might be up your alley. Add time to Salzburg and do outings?
And the following in/near Garmisch-Partenkirchen might be fun:
Gasthof Fraundorfer in G-P
The Karwendelbahn and more in lovely Mittenwald

(Scroll down at the "Mittenwald" link above to the Zugspitze - Germany's tallest mountain.)
Why three days in Fussen? I thing Garmish is better. You can do the Jugspitze (tallest mountain in Germany). Take the cog train or cable car.
If you are in Salzburg, consider adding a day trip to nearby Berchtesgaden.
Also, if you do Oberamargau, continue on north to Augsburg, a city over 2000 years old and do a day there.
Thanks for all the help.
