Exploring near Munich by car

We will be in Munich the second week of September and are planning to rent a car for one day to explore near Neuschwanstein. Any good tips on towns/parks/photogenic vistas for us to visit?

We are doing roughly the same thing the week before. There are dozens of places to choose from but for 2 days we opted to drive from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen (and maybe the cable car to the Zugspitze, Mount Wank or Alpspix) for lunch, a stop at Schloss Linderhof in the afternoon (possibly adding a stop at Die Wieskirche and/or Kloster Ettal depending on time) and then drive to Hohenschwangau (the slightly longer route through Oberammergau) where we'll spend the night. Neuschwanstein tour first thing the next day (you could easily add Schloss Hohenschwangau if you like), a walk around the Alpsee, the Tegelberg cable car and/or luge (a summertime sled down the hill) and exploring Fussen. We return the car to Munich the next morning. This is a ton to try and cram into a couple of days and we'll stay very flexible with the only things booked being the hotel and the Neuschwanstein tour. All of the outdoor activities will be dependent on the weather of course - there's no point to spend an hour at the top of the Zugspitze if it's just going to be looking at the inside of a cloud and hikes - even around perfectly picturesque Alpine lakes - are no fun for me if it's pouring rain. Use google maps to check driving times between locations and add a comfortable cushion.
