As part of a 2 week trip we are going to be spending two nights in Bonn, although we'll be dividing our time between Bonn and Cologne. The hotels are considerably cheaper in Bonn and the cities are only about 20 minutes apart. We just noticed a really good symphony concert in Cologne. It lets out around 10 PM. I don't have the schedule in front of me, but the next train from Cologne to Bonn is a little before 11 PM, arriving around 11:15 PM or so. Is this safe? Anything to watch out for, either in/near the stations?

I wouldn't give it a second thought. If it makes you feel better though, ride in the first car where the driver is located. This isn't very late at night and you will be with lots of other people riding the trains, riding between 2 cities, so no lonely platforms in the middle of the countryside.
