eurail vs german rail pass question

my travel begins in amsterdam ends in munich
mostly germany and a side trip
to salzburg

seems a german rail pass plus stand alone tickets from
amsterdam to berlin one way is cheaper
than a eurail pass?

Hi,
The calculations are yours to make, but your conclusion seems correct. A Eurail global pass will cost a significant extra, just for a short leg out of Germany. Also, the German rail pass would cover you as soon as you reach Germany, so you'd just need to buy tickets from Amsterdam to the first German station, if they're cheaper than tickets all the way to Berlin (not necessarily the case!)

Actually if your route is set, it might be even cheaper to just buy tickets in advance, as German long distance trains can be very cheap bought early (up to six months early), and each region (Land) has a regional pass that is a very good deal for day trips, especially if there's 2 or more of you.

So to give a more definitive answer, maybe share your broad route and dates?

You can easily check out the prices of advance-bought tickets by using the train planner of the Bahn (the German railways) for a date 4 or 6 weeks from now. You'll be amazed to see how low the »Savings fare« (in German: »Sparpreis«) can be. A ticket Amsterdam to Berlin, e.g., bought last-minute at the station can be EUR 130, while bought in advance it can be as cheap as EUR 39,90.
