essen and vicinity

hello all,

i may be going to essen to attend a wedding in late may. provided the virus situation allows travel i am thinking of visiting cologne, trier and worms while i am on the ground. my vague idea is to spend about a week in germany before heading to italy for the bulk of my summer break. my interest is art and architecture, older the better! would love suggestions about other places and sites i am not aware of within a couple of hours train/bus ride from essen. this will be my first trip to the country.

thanks,

Although the Dom is the most-visited site in Germany, note that only the churches in Cologne are old. But it's a favorite of mine, because the museums and walking are so good.

Be sure to read up on the Fachwerkstrasse, quite a lot of towns. Touristy but closer to Essen is Monschau, may have better bus service from Duesseldorf, I don't know. Munster has some history, and of course Aachen. I haven't been there, but I think I've read both positive and negative comments here about Mönchengladbach.
