Flying out of Frankfurt on a early morning flight with my family (4 total). I want to check my family into a hotel close by the airport in the late afternoon the day before and then go drop my rental car off. Then a cab back and get a shuttle/cab to the airport in the early morning. Any recommendation's from experienced travelers of Frankfurt airport on hotels, area or plan. Thanks Hank
Hank,
I'm sure Jo, Lee or one of the others will be along shortly to offer specific information on your questions. What time does your flight depart?
Rather than staying right in Frankfurt, you can easily stay in nearby towns as there's good rail access to the airport (FRA has two stations, a Regional and a Fernbahnhof). I've travelled from as far as Bacharach to connect with a flight, but there are closer towns that are only about a 20 minute ride from the airport. I'll leave the suggestion on the best towns to stay to the Germany experts here.
Thanks Jo,
We will departing at 1030am so I would like to be walking in the airport by 8:30am at the latest. We will be in the Rhein area the day before. Never have taken a train over there so not to familiar, but willing to have it as an option. Little worried about rush hour and not familiar with the area, so want the car gone the day before.
I have flown out of the airport a number of times. A few times I stayed right at the airport and got rid of the car the night before, and while it was convenient, it was the airport. Last trip Jo recommended a hotel and we stayed in town with easy access to public transportation. It was great because our last night we wandered around and took a bus somewhere for dinner. I do not remember the hotel but it was one of the popular chain hotels... maybe the Ibis. Hopefully Jo will see this post and respond.
Rather than stay at the airport, you could stay at the Excelsior Hotel next to the Hauptbahnhof and drop off your car there. Take the train the next morning to the airport. The trains take 11 min. (much faster than any airport hotel unless you are at the Sheraton or the 2 Hiltons) and there is a train every 15 min. starting at 04:15. Group ticket is 15.80 €.
Excelsior has family rooms for 4 people, free hot breakfast starting at 05:00, free mini-bar, free wifi and free coffee and cake in the lobby. http://www.hotelexcelsior-frankfurt.de/cms/index.php/en/room-for-4/room-for-four
This gives you the chance to do a bit of sightseeing in one of Germanys' most historic city that afternoon and evening, and saves you a lot of going back and forth, a cheaper hotel, no cab fee, and a wide variety of dining options.
Thanks Jo, sounds like a great option.
