Erlanger Bergkirchweih (mini Oktoberfest near Nurnberg)

Has anyone ever been? From what I've seen online, it looks fun. June 1-12, 2017. When we will be in the area!

Never been. I have been to Erlangen and enjoyed it. I have been to several local beer and wine fest. We always had a good time. I would certainly consider it if in the area. Things you just take a chance on, often turn out to be the the best.

The Erlangen Bergkirchweih has nothing to do with the Munich Oktoberfest. It's a traditional beer festival in the hilly woods outside the city upon the old beer cellars (that's why it's called Bergkirchweih, »kermis on the hill«). Think of it as a giant beer garden - no beer tents, all open air, and you can even bring along your own food. No roller coasters and the like, just one Big Wheel and a few carousels (pictures: https://www.berch.info/607/items/der-letzte-bergtag.html). I like it (have studied in Erlangen), but have to admit that the Annafest in nearby Forchheim is much better (24 beer cellars in operation: http://www.anna-fest.de/index.html)

It was fun, but If you go then I recommend you leave early. My one visit a few years ago up on the hill in the seats and tables I stayed too late (21:30). Absolute packed and drunken. People standing on the seats and tables clapping and singing with the band/s. Could not get to the bathroom anymore and forget about getting another beer (self service). Great party for those that like this sort of thing.

Danke,
I appreciate hearing from people who have attended. We will check it out, but go during the day. Hopefully we will have nice weather. It will be fun for us to see all the people in dirndl and lederhosen.
