Are there any fees/permits that we would need to purchase to visit Switzerland for the day from Germany?
Similar to what needs to be purchased for Austria.

Just drive the secondary roads. Many navigation devices allow you to pick your route without tolls or highways. There are some areas like near the Bodensee that you do not need a vignette for short stretches on the Swiss Autobahn. I don't think I have ever seen a border check between Germany and Switzerland.

perhaps you've never been in the tailbacks at the end of the A5 in Weil am Rhein. I have never not been stopped and quickly checked there.
