I want to spend 4-5 days hiking based in either Ehrwald or Mittenwald, any big difference? Is one a nicer town to be based? Is it easy to get to trails without a car? It will be in July and I know there will be lots of tourists (like me!)
Also I am thinking of staying in Fussen for 3 days just to visit castles..is that a good place to be based?

When you want to do some hiking near Füssen
Take the Bus No.73 from the Füssen Train Station towards Steingaden and go 30 min to Halblech a small Village
Bus stop is in center of the village Walk back the main road from there to where you entered the village
There go left signposted Kenzenhütte 10 min till you cross a bridge and find a car park where a little Bus Shuttle take you 20 min to the Kenzenhütte Alpine Hut where you can have refreshments see the waterfall nearby and start hiking back easy to Halblech 10km or difficult some other waymarked loop trails returning to the hut and go back later with the shuttle bus down to Halblech

Ehrwald or Mittenwald? Hard choice... Mittenwald for the town, Ehrwald for the Zugspitz Arena hiking. Hard to beat being at the base of the Zugspitz and Sonnenspitz on a clear day.
