I have seen conflicting information on this, even on official sites. I am traveling US to Frankfurt then 2 hour layover on to Sarajevo. Since I originate and end in non-Schengen only passing through FRA airport will I go through EES? Thank you in advance.

It depends on a lot of things. What time are you arriving in Franfurt? I hear usually between 8-10am is where congestion is.

I’m assuming this is on one ticket. You will stay in the transit area and not go through EES.

Time of day is irrelevant. If you are on a NonSchengen to NonSchengen connecting flight on a single ticket, then you stay airside and dont need to clear Passport Control in Frankfurt.
Please note the correct spelling. Frankfort is in Kentucky.

Is EES a substitute for Schengen or an additional layer? That is, after going through EES, if you are staying in Germany or going on to another Schengen country, do you still have to go through Schengen immigration?

Lee, are you asking if EES is a substitute for Passport Control at Schengen entry points? Its not a substitute at present, but a part of the process.

So if you are transiting FRA from the US to Bosnia (out of Schengen to out of Schengen, you still have to go through EES, and if you are going to stay in Germany or go on to another Schengen country, you have to go through both EES and Schengen immigration?

If you are flying non Schengen to Germany to non Schengen on a single ticket (only connecting in Germany), you stay airside, and dont do Passport Control until your final destination. If you are flying non Schengen to Germany, you do EES and Passport Control on arrival. If you are flying Schengen to Schengen you dont do EES or Passport Control at all. If you are flying Schengen to non Schengen you do EES and Passport Control before departing the Schengen airport.

EES stands for Entry Exit System. As the name suggests, it’s a system you go through every time you enter the Schengen zone and every time you exit the Schengen zone. Before EES was introduced you only had to show your passport when entering and exiting the Schengen zone. Now, in addition to showing your passport, you also need to have your fingerprints and a photo taken.
If you transfer from a non-Schengen destination to another non-Schengen destination, you won’t enter the Schengen zone and thus don’t have to go through passport control and thus don’t have to do EES.
