I will be in the Rhine area Bacharach and wanted to try to go to Strasbourg, FR. I know I can get a Lander-ticket for that region which will take me to Karlsruhe but I can't find an economical way to get to Strasbourg. I tried the regular DB train web site and the price is pretty expensive for the trip. Anybody have any suggestions? Thank you
Maybe the Lander-Ticket is not your best value, depending on other travel plans that day and on other days in Germany. You could get the advance-discount ticket for the whole Bacharach-Strasbourg route for as low as 29 euros. Or, if you have a couple more significant train travel days in Germany, then the German pass can be a great value (especially with a partner) and gives you flexible access all over the country, without needing to lock in dates and times or to stick to the slower trains..
No matter how you cut it, you will only have about 4 hours in Strasbourg. Is it worth it? Now you could buy a separate Baden-Wurtemburg Laender ticket, that would get you as far as Kehl, which is just across the river, and a supplement for the Kehl-Strasbourg leg. Then you might want to use the Quer-Durch-Land ticket instead. If you want to visit, it might be best to pull up stakes and travel there for a night.
I will be traveling about 22 Apr 2014 and plan to stay in Strasbourg a few days. I looked for the advanced purchase 29 euro ticket on DB web site and could not find anything near that price. Am I looking in the wrong place or should I stick with the Quer-durchs-Land-ticket. Thanks everyone for all your help. It can be a little overwhelming trying to figure everything out
If you hit the "local transport only" button, you will see a fare of 44.90 into Strasbourg. If you are traveling with another person, then the QDL to Kehl will be the less expensive. The fare from Kehl to Strasbourg is 4.10. You can buy in advance and just have it in your pocket if the conductor checks you after Kehl.
Since the advance-discount fares go on sale two months ahead, the better rates are already sold out for your travel date one month from now. But DB shows a fare of 49 euros (one way) if you depart at 12:30 and arrive at 16:00.
Sam has suggested the regional train ticket for - €44.90 to Strasbourg. But you can get to Strasbourg using a Rheinland-Pfalz ticket (daypass, one of the Länder Tickets, €23 for one) plus one regular DB ticket (€17.90 for one) for regional trains between Karlsruhe and Strasbourg (The R-P ticket will get you as far as Karlsruhe.) That puts your fare at €40.90.
