We had a two-hour layover in Koln. We weren't very hungry but didn't want to eat "train food." If Koln Cathedral is at your back, turn left onto the main drag. There is a bakery, Merzenich, where you can get quiche, sandwiches and pastries. We got quiche to take away and ate at the Roman Arch park in front of the Cathedral. €2.50 for quiche, sandwiches €2-3.

We visited there as a day trip from St.Goar in 2008. If you get back to Koln, a tour of the Cathedral or even just the self audio guide is worth the cost.

Yep, did the Cathedral first thing. Just didn't want to join the THRONGS at the cafés. It was busy and hot. We found a picnic more to our liking that day.
