East Europe (Berln- Prague - Vienna- Zagreb- Budapest - Krakow- Berlin

Hi friends,
I am visiting Berlin for a talk and then my family (husband and 2 kids) will be joining me in Berlin in early April.2025. I have always wanted to do the historical east Europe train trip and stop in Czech, Austria, Croatia, Hungary, Poland. This is sort of our travel plan for 8 days. I looked into the trains (I used RometoRio) and found various reviews about trains never being on time etc. Some suggesting to take Eurail pass instead.

I would like you advice on
1) To buy individual train tickets to each of these countries? Or should I get Eurail pass.
2) Also, do you use the train website to purchase?
3) Is there a verified hotel booking website for Europe?

Thanks a lot; this forum is great.

Looking forward to your suggestions.

Hmm- how could buying a pass make a train more punctual (Eurail is not a train operator)? It might make traveling on the "unpunctual" trains cheaper, but to find out you have to compare its price with that of individual tickets. By the way, if you look at the punctuality of flights, you won't find trains in Europe really bad.

So, do you use the train website to purchase?

The rule of thumb is to buy the ticket in the country of origin of a train and from its operator, e.g., CD in the Czech Republic, ÖBB in Austria and so on.

Thank you so much.
What i meant was if the Eurail pass was a better option than the individual tickets.
Also, the train delay was a different question.
Thank you so much for your reply.

A lot of people use booking.com for hotels. The reviews tend to be more legit since only people that have stayed at the properties can review. I use booking to search for hotels then, when I can, I book directly. I use travel guides, usually the RS guides, and this forum when necessary to find places I want to stay. The type of place you want to stay at likely impacts the way you will book.

I feel you have way too many cities for 8 days. You will spend most of your time on the train and getting to and from the train. I've been to all the cities you mention, and I understand the appeal, but its really not doable. From Berlin, I'd suggest Prague, Vienna, and Budapest. Even then the train travel between them is relatively long. I'd suggest your family meet you in Prague and that you fly home from Budapest. If you have the time (I doubt that will happen) and want to see another city, you could day trip to Bratislava from Vienna.

I have not had a scenario in which a Eurail pass makes sense for us. I typically buy point to point, in advance, when it saves money. I also buy from the country specific websites. Its been quite a while since I've used the Hungarian and Czech trains, I would suspect their websites have become more user friendly. The Austrian rail company (OBB) is great to use, and the website is easy. For Germany, you can use DBahn. A great website to learn about train travel is "The Man at Seat 61" https://www.seat61.com/

Rome2Rio can be a great resource for planning. I only use it as a starting point and then move to what I find are more reliable resources. You can also try google maps as a way to parse out transportation options. Even Google maps has its limitations and doesn't always have all available options. From Rome2Rio or Google Maps, go on to using the country specific site.

Thank you so much Jules for such a detailed reply.
This is very helpful.
Do you generally use trams, metro, bus inside the city? is the public transport well set in the Europe?
The US is completely an automobile drive setup and so we need a car here. LOL

Anusha, I rarely use cabs or ubers in Europe, In general, I find the public transportation excellent. And I do love to walk, shortish distances. I see so much.

Once you get to the old towns of Prague and Vienna, you will have little need for transportation at all. Everything is fairly compact. For Budapest, we used their convenient metro quite a bit. It was easy to use. Krakow also has convenient transportation. We used trolleys/buses.

How old are the kids.

Thanks Jules.
We also rarely use cabs. I dont even have the app on my phone. LOL.
We do a lot of National parks hikes in the US, so the kids are used to walking miles for hours.
My kids are are 12 and 9.

  1. You have to do the maths. It might be cheaper with a pass or it it might be cheaper with single tickets. An advantage of the pass is that it gives you a bit of flexibility.
  2. Always buy tickets from the company that actually runs the train. Rometorio and Google maps all have their limitations. In general the best way to look up schedules is from DB, www.bahn.de

You might find reviews from angry travellers, but most people will not bother writing a review of a train trip. And while some trains are delayed, most trains are not delayed.

And within a city the best way to get around is usually walking and public transportation.

Thank you so very much everyone. Appreciate all your advice and am going to make my reservations through trains from individual countries. Appreciate all your help.

Anusha.

Look at Jules’ post again. You have six cities and 7 travel days over the course of just 8 days. In 2018, when we took the train from Prague to Vienna it was a good 4 hours or so, not counting getting to the station in Prague from the hotel or getting from the train station in Vienna to the place where we stayed.

We bussed from Vienna to Zagreb because that was the best way to travel in my estimation; faster than rail at that time and not really a much slower than flying when you consider airports. 5 or 6 hours by bus - again without the time from hotel to bus station at one end and from station to hotel at the other, though that wasn’t much since the bus depots were in town.

Perhaps you have limited desire to truly see or experience any of the cities you are traveling through. It sounds like you are enchanted by the train journey.

Is the same true for the rest of the family? Consider, example, if they want to spend a few hours in the Prague Castle and walk across the Charles Bridge or see how the Czech people survived and ultimately overturned the Habsburgs … and the communists. Prague has a charming museum to a fascinating artist, Mucha, whose works will be familiar to you. What of Prague’s Jewish past, or Kafka, or its food and beer, its music or its “Fred and Ginger” building?

Or, might any in your family wish to see the cathedral in Vienna where Mozart was married, or the world class Kuntshistoriches Museum, or any of the Habsburg palaces or the Vienna Opera? What of its parks or markets? If so, then you need at least three days in Vienna.

8 days with your husband and children in central and Eastern Europe should be a time of your lifetimes. Enjoy it.

LATE NOTE. - I really did not mean to initiate a round of folks saying that you have a bad plan. You have a dream of a great train route. I get that. And you will already be in Berlin for you speaking engagement before your husband and kids join you.

All I meant was to initiate reflection for your family trip before you book it.

How many stops in hiw many days aside. I would purchase individual tickets using the national train company Apps to hold tgr reservations and tickets. I suspect it "might" cost a little more but will be easier in the long run. By tge time you put together a workable plan, you are talking 3 tickets ... maybe 4.

As you can see it was longer than your entire vacation, and we left out Gdansk. Do you really intend to go to all those places in 8 days? Long ago, we spent two weeks in Austria with Innsbruck-Salzburg-Munich-Vienna, a few days in each. It took us a long time to get to Poland, because it never seemed to be "right next to" any of the places we were going, including multiple trips to Berlin. It just took too long to get there. So we made it the first stop on our trip for 2019.

It's not fair for me to impose my travel style on someone else, but this does not seem physically possible. Have you used Google Maps to show you the simple distances between the places you want to go? Google Maps does attempt to show train trips, but it's not very accurate for that.

What is it about historical Eastern Europe that you want to see? Are all of these places in the major cities or do you need to travel into the smaller towns or countryside?

Also, With 8 days available to you and your family do you really want to spend hours every day or two on the train? Berlin-Prage is 5 hours. Prague-Vienna is 4 hours. Vienna to Budapest is 3 hours.

Regarding hotels, all of the major chain hotels have trustworthy sites for booking their brands. Be aware that many hotels are not set-up liike US hotels where two adults & two children can share a room.

Congratuilations on being invited to speak in Berlin and have a great time with your family.
