We will be staying at the Platzl, which is near Marienplatz. I've looked at private transfers, but they seem pricey. Is there a better way? I think I read that the busses go to the train station?
You mean that question seriously?

Take the S-Bahn it is safer than taking the Blue Line to O'hare Chicago

They have taxis as well. Not dangerous.
Public transit is excellent in Germany. No need for a private transfer.
Is there a better way?
Take any S-Bahn from the airport to Marienplatz then walk.

Assuming 2 of you, you can buy a group all-zone day ticket for 24.60 EUR. That will get you on the S-Bahn to Marienplatz (walk up stairs and you are there), and free use of the Munich transit system until 6 am the next day.
Does the S-Bahn 8 stop at Marienplatz? If so, then take that from the airport.
Whenever I go the Marienplatz, at least once every time I stay in Munich, I walk to the Marienplatz from the central station since I stay there.
Does the S-Bahn 8 stop at Marienplatz?
Yes it does. So does the S-1.
The S1 and the S8 leave from opposite sides of the platform in the airport S-Bahn station. both will take you to Marienplatz. The S1 goes around to the west end of town and goes to Marienplatz via the Hauptbahnhof. The S8 goes around to the east and goes to Marienplatz via Ostbahnhof. The S8 takes less time, but if the S1 is the next train leaving, it will get you to Marienplatz sooner. Take whichever train is leaving next.
There should be a diagram of the route on the upper wall of the train car. Use it to tell you when you are coming to Marienplatz. On the S1, Marienplatz is the second station after the Hauptbahnhof. On the S8, Isartor is one station before Marienplatz.
On this map, the S1 is the blue line, S8 is orange.
The Marienplatz station is a multilevel station with escalators between levels. The first level under the street is a mezzanine. On the next level down, Gleis 1, the trains arrive from the direction of the Hauptbahnhof. This is the level for the S1 from the airport. The S8 arrives on the level below that, Gleis 2, coming from the airport via Ostbahnhof.
The Lufthansa bus will take you to the north side of the Hauptbahnhof, directly above the S-Bahn station, but the ticket is only for the bus. From the Hbf you will have to walk over a mile, through Marienplatz, to your hotel or buy a ticket (Kurtzstrecke, 1,50€) for the S-Bahn to Marienplatz.
Normally, the best way to get from the Lufthansa bus to Platzl would be to take Tram 19 (dir. Berg am Laim) from the Hbf to the National Theater stop (still a Kurzstrecke). It's a short walk from National Theater to your hotel, but Tram 19 isn't currently running that route. It will resume that route on Monday, June 24.
unless you are planning on during Oktoberfest and that in the evening after the tents let out the last of the heavy drinkers any method of travel will be "safe".
What do you fear?
Lovely hotel, great location, the area is completely safe. I can’t imagine taking a car or taxi. Take the train as others have stated and get off at Marienplatz, walk past the Altes Rathaus, turn left on SparkassenstraBe, go two blocks, Platzl on right side of street. Their name and a decoration are painted on the side of the building so look up. The entrance is kind of in the middle of the block. If you make a mistake, no harm will come to you. While in Munich, treat yourself to breakfast upstairs at Dallmayr (sidewalks cut though the blocks) and shop for all kinds of food and wines. Also make sure to get cheese and fruit at the Viktualienmarkt. What fun!
Fantastic hotel! Train to Marienplatz and either walk from there or grab a taxi.
Hmmm. Seems to me the hotel website would have recommendations as will the airport website as well. I think someone has posted that. Getting to Munich from the airport is pretty straight-forward per the directions several responders have made. Don't feel overwhelmed. Munich airport is great. When you get to the train (and there are lots of directions on the website) just stand in line to speak with person selling tickets. No reason to be flummoxed by machines. Don't forget to validate your tix for the train, though. Ask at the ticket counter if you have not done before.
