Hi! We are interested in one or two day trips while we're in Munich. We are open to any type of sightseeing.
We would prefer to go on our own (using the train) verses a guided tour. Thus we'd like the route there to be as easy as possible.
Any suggestions?

Munich > Herrsching (50 min. by direct S-bahn train) + walk to Andechs Monastery
Munich > Landshut (45 minutes by direct train)
Munich - Regensburg- a UNESCO World Heritage site (1.3 hours by direct train)
Munich to Innsbruck and the Alps is about 2 hours by train. It's a compact city to explore, and the mountains surrounding the city are absolutely breathtaking.
Salzburg. Direct train to a beautiful small city.
Very good and nice overview of Bavarian towns and cities.
And to stay very near: Lake Starnberg can be reached by local public transport (S-Bahn).
Andechs Monastery is always worth a trip.
I did day trips to Regensburg and Passau and both were well worth the trip.

Or, from the S-Bahn stop in Herrsching, walk about 200 meters to the lakefront and board one of the stately paddle-wheel steamships for a trip across the Ammersee to my favorite Bavarian village, Dießen am Ammersee.
