Easiest Day Trips (by train) from Munich

Hi! We are interested in one or two day trips while we're in Munich. We are open to any type of sightseeing.

We would prefer to go on our own (using the train) verses a guided tour. Thus we'd like the route there to be as easy as possible.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Munich to Innsbruck and the Alps is about 2 hours by train. It's a compact city to explore, and the mountains surrounding the city are absolutely breathtaking.

I did day trips to Regensburg and Passau and both were well worth the trip.

We've only been to Munich once, so others will have more expertise. But we took a day-trip to Nuremberg which was easy by rail. Nuremberg was worth the trip, with a lot of olde-worlde sights (mostly rebuilt after the War, I assume), and various German Nazi-related sights.

Munich > Herrsching (50 min. by direct S-bahn train) + walk to Andechs Monastery

Or, from the S-Bahn stop in Herrsching, walk about 200 meters to the lakefront and board one of the stately paddle-wheel steamships for a trip across the Ammersee to my favorite Bavarian village, Dießen am Ammersee.
