Early December trip to Germany - Looking for Christmas markets and sights to see.

I just booked a flight in and out of Frankfurt, I don't think there is anything that I want to see in Frankfurt so I want to catch a train as soon as I land. One of the main things I want to do on this short trip is travel to Hamburg to see Miniatur Wanderland. The other item on my list is to stroll thru some Christmas markets. I also enjoy riding the trains and viewing the scenery as it goes by.
1. I am looking for suggestions on other sights to see while in Hamburg?
2. Decent hotel in Hamburg near train station?
3. Where is a good Christmas market?
4. Nice scenic train ride in early December?

Thank you,
Steve

Youtube cruisers Ben and David ( Cruise with Ben and David ) did a Christmas river cruise last Dec. and visited Cologne and Mainz markets. Nice videos on their visits to the markets.

Most definitely, there are decent hotels both 3 and 4 star near Hamburg Hbf, actually located across the street when you take the Kirchenallee exit out of the station. I always stay near the station.

Depending on your interests in tracking down sites in Hamburg, Hamburg is the cultural center of North Germany. All the recent trips to Germany, i always stay in Hamburg or Kiel, right in the train station area...super convenient.

Okay, caveat here - I have not stayed here yet, but I booked a room in Hamburg at the Hotel City House, which is near the train station but on a more residential street. I will be staying there next week and will post an update as to how it is, but it's gotten very good reviews on Google so far.

The Frankfurt market is supposed to be good, and while Hamburg is the best city in the world (no bias here!), our markets are underwhelming. For what to see/do in Hamburg (besides the Elbphilharmonie) we would need to know more about your interests. Are you a Rote Flora person? A Große Freiheit person? The Nikolai, the Alster, the Reeperbahn, Beatles Platz, Sternschanze, but also Speicherstadt, Landungsbrücken, St. Pauli / Fischmarkt, Blankenese, Airbus could be interesting. The nearby towns of Glückstadt, State, Lüneburg, Wilster or the nature of St. Peter-Ording or the Baltic. . . . all of these are great if you are based in Hamburg. Bergen-Belsen is also not far if you wish to see a KZ. There is a TON to see and do up here even in December, and knowing what your interests are will help.

For markets, I would recommend Bremen and Lübeck up in this area, with Bremen being our personal favourite. The train ride for either is average in terms of "scenic," but short and easy. We go to Bremen at least once every year for the markets, sometimes more than once.

Germany in December is only going to be "scenic" in deepest Bavaria or maybe along the Rhein. There is beauty in the moors of the north in the winter, but a bleak, desolate beauty that isn't for everyone and is generally not considered "scenic." I love it, but it isn't generally what tourists seek. Also, keep in mind that days are very short here in December (dark by 4:30), so "scenic" train rides would have to be enjoyed in the middle of the day and thus eat up one of your travel days.

Hi,

On "decent hotel...near the station." Two of them I would recommend if you do not want to go dirt cheap. These two are located next to each other opposite of Hamburg Hbf when you exit on Kirchenallee.

  1. Hotel Fürst Bismarck (3 star)...stay there a number of times, very nice, en suite facilities, good ample breakfast buffet. If I don't want to go dirt cheap, this one is my first choice, basically, my regular hotel in Hamburg.

  2. Hotel Europäsischer Hof (4 star), stayed here once, if you're after more luxury, very comfortable and nice. I decided to spurge one time and picked this one, plus Hotel Bismarck was booked up, ie, no single room available.

The first times I stayed in these two were due to their convenient location, was not based on reading their reviews, which I normally ignore anyway.

"...enjoy riding the trains and viewing the scenery...." You have come to areas of Germany where seeing the scenery is well worth it as long as it's day light. I suggest taking the ride from Hamburg to Cuxhaven and Hamburg to Flensburg.

I have done these or parts of these routes a number of times always during summertime. In the winter you will have less daylight to enjoy these interesting routes and seeing the small towns passing by.

Should you want to check out esoteric historical sites and museums, the greater Hamburg area has three museums dealing in Prussian-German history....Lüneburg, Pinneberg bei Hamburg (take the S-Bahn from Hamburg Hbf) , and also Friedrichsruh im Sachensenwald, also accessible on the S-Bahn.
