Eagle's Nest and Konigssee

We will travel on a Saturday from Salzburg to see the Eagle's Nest. One post took bus 840 and then 841 and stopped at lake Konigssee before going to the Eagle's Nest with Historic Eagle's Nest Tours. I saw that the bus leaves one hour later and stops running one hour earlier on the weekends. Though the bus is faster and less expensive it looks like the train is the best option for weekend days. Any discounts or better itinerary plans to suggest? Thank you!

There is a more direct route to the Kehlstein Busabfahrt (where you get the special bus up the private road to the Nest). Going via Königsee would be way out of the way. Bus 840 takes you to the Berchtesgaden Hbf/ZOB where you catch bus 838, 12 minutes to the Dokumentation Center. It's a 5 minute walk to the Busabfahrt.

One weekdays, the last direct RVO bus back to Salzburg leaves Berchtesgaden at 18:15. On weekends the last direct bus is at 17:15. However, on weekends, the 18:15 bus goes as far as the Untersbergbahn, where you can transfer to an Austrian bus (#25) for the rest of the trip. Here is the schedule for the Salzburg-Berchtesgaden bus.

The trains back to Salzburg run a lot later than the buses, almost to midnight. If you want to take a bus TO Berchtesgaden and the train back, get a BGL TagesTicket Bus & Bahn from the bus (RVO 840) driver. It costs 12€/adult. That ticket would cover the bus to Berchtesgaden, roundtrip to/from the Dok. Center, and the train back to Salzburg. It does not cover the special bus up to the Eagles Nest.

If you leave Salzburg early enough on bus 840, you might get to Berchtesgaden in time to make a roundtrip on bus 841 to see Köginsee and get back for the start of your tour.
