Driving route questions “Bavaria-Austria”

There are two driving sections of our upcoming trip “Aug 25-Sept 9th 2023” that I could use some advice on.

First portion is driving from Regensburg to Berchtesgaden. We plan on stopping at Weltenburg Abbey for an early lunch and then continuing towards Berchtesgaden. We’re actually staying in Marktschellenberg which is north of BG. We’re looking for the most scenic drive and are considering a stop over in Passau, but the most scenic drive is our main priority.

The second portion is when leaving BG we will be driving to Mittenwald, and staying overnight in Leutasch Austria. Google maps is suggests taking A8 West to Raubling and then heading South into Austria through Innsbruck. Is that the most scenic route? Suggestions welcome and what would be a good stop over along that journey?

Thanks :-)

A8 (Autobahn 8) is not scenic but fast - a typical freeway.

If you want scenic stay away from the Autobahn and enjoy a slow scenic ride on a minor road.

To be able to use the Autobahn in Austria you would have to buy a voucher or your rental car might have it already. In any case you need to ask the rental company.

Hi there,

an alternative option to reach Weltenburg Abbey is by boat from Kelheim.30 km west of Regensburg
It takes 1 hour upstream from Kelheim to the Abbey through the Weltenburger Enge (gorge?) and about 50 minutes back
Its faster downstream.
First departure at Kelheim is 9:30 check website

for more details

Its defintely worth it.

But you need at least 3 hours to go there have lunch and go back.

Car park available at Kelheim Wöhrdplatz (pay), free parking when you drive a bit further along the river (500m)

From Marktschellenberg to Leutasch. It's a long drive (4 hours), but use secondary roads only and drive towards Sankt Johann, then thru Innsbuch, past Seefeld then to Leutasch. It will be slow go thru the ski areas near the Wilde Kaiser Mountain, 30kph thru parts of innsbruck, and a hill climb to Seefeld. Many "Blitzer" speed cameras along the route too. If the weather is bad and you can't see the mountains, a faster route may be better.

For the Berchtesgaden-Leutasch trip, I would travel Lofer-St. Johann-Worgl to the A12 and then on to Leutasch.

You will need a vignette for the Austrian motorways and an IDP for driving in Austria.

The map on the link below shows all roads where a vignette is needed.

Another (a bit longer) route from Weltenburg Abbey to Marktschellenberg is via Landshut, Wasserburg am Inn, Seeon Monastery and Seebruck (on north shore of lake Chiemsee).
All of the above-mentioned locations would be worth a stop.

Remark: Fastest way to reach Markschellenberg is via the Autobahn Salzburg/Gröding that requires Austrian Vignette. Otherwise, you can to the longer route via Bad Reichenhall and Berchtesgaden

For Marktschellenberg to Leutasch I would recommend to avoid heavy traffic around Innsbruck but drive the absolutely stunning route via Achensee, Vorderriss and Walgau. The road between Vorderriss and Walgau is a toll road, but it’s worth it.

If you have some time left (30 minutes one way), you may drive from Vorderriss to Großer Ahornboden (maple tree meadow), one of the most beautiful locations in the Karwendel mountains.
