Driving Munich to Neuschwanstein to Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Hello first time posting here.
The question is Can Munich to Neuschwanstein (Tour Neuschwanstein) drive to Garmisch-Partenkirchen via the road past Linderhof Palace and then go up Zugspitz staying in Garmisch-Partenkirchen overnight be done. How long does just the Neuschwanstein tour take? any Idea what the crowd's will be like in on late Sept mornings?
To me it seems many people like the trains which are very good but I have a passion for Driving instead of being tied by train or bus schedule's. To us its more about driving through the countryside stopping here and there along the way. Our reservations for Neuschwanstein are at 8:55am or 9:55am (I made 2) if we run into traffic or other delays out of Munich.
Neither the wife or I like to poke around too long at tourist sites I also do have a vignette I was able to purchase online to travel in Austria. (Innsbruck our next stop) If its a good day the plan is to make a stop for pictures at Linderhof and be on our way since were more interested in going up Zugspitz

Any thought to this plan.

Where in Munich? What day of the week?

Critical for a reasonable answer.

The plan is to pickup the car the night before park it near the hotel in Munich and head out early (7am) on a Wednesday.

The reason I asked where in Munich is that it makes a great deal of difference in travel time. The autobahn ring isn't continuous in the south and southwest, and although it looks like a close connection between the bits it is a slow and difficult connection much of the time, including using a narrow and busy tunnel.

On the other hand if you are staying in the west you can get onto the autobahn reasonable straightforwardly and may miss some of the traffic. If, like me, you stay in the east near the Messe it is not an easy trek through the city. Be aware that many (most?) of the traffic lights have cameras and there are lots of speed cameras too. Driving in Munich is non-trivial and parking can be both difficult and expensive.

When you do the drive to Garmisch-Partenkirchen at the end of the drive I suggest having a look at Oberammergau and especially at the church in Ettal which is quite magnificent. If you drive from Füssen via Reutte and Austria the drive is along a wide valley and not in the mountains - I prefer the way with mountains.

I think you have a pretty busy day planned.

Thanks Nigel

Were staying near Ostbahnhof Like I posted before the plan is to pickup the rental car at the central train station the night before around 7pm Drive it to the hotel parking and bite the bullet and pay for 1 night of parking at the hotel. there rate is 12.00E a day which to me is Excellent.
Thanks for the info about the traffic cams I'll keep an eye out for them. They keep threatening to put them here but people and traffic lawyers keep fighting back. Would you know what the speed limit is inside the city? I'm assuming its like 30mph like most cities here in the states.
When you talked about the road through the Mountains Google maps gives me 2 options once we leave the parking lot at Hohenschwangau option 1 is through Reutte and Austria. this I'm assuming is your "Valley Route"
Are you saying Googles option 2 staying in Germany going back up 17 to Stiengaden making a right onto what looks like St2059 over to 23 and then heading down 23 through Bad Bayersoie, and Oberammergau would be your Mountains route? A more picturesque ride?
As for me I'm used to close quarters combat driving I travel into Manhattan NYC about 7 or 8 times a year. When driving in Manhattan sometimes inches matter. Parking these day in Manhattan averages anywhere from $40-$70 a day its crazy but they get it .Those Manhattan garages are always full. So the 12.00E to me is a bargain

Google maps gives me 2 options

I'd prefere a third, the most scenic one: From Füssen go over into Tyrol to Reutte. In Reutte, turn east towards Plansee (i.e. don't follow B179 signposted for Garmisch), which will bring back you into Bavaria. You will come into the Graswang Valley between the north and south chains of the Ammergebirge, bypass Linderhof Castle and Ettal (baroque abbey) end end up in Oberau, 9km north of Garmisch.
