I will be spending a couple of days between Leipzig and Nuremberg. During my travel to Germany I will have a car for 10 days. I am thinking about taking a side trip into Czechia. Any suggestions on travel into that western tip of Czechia from Germany? I think it will be the As area.
I would ask that question in Czech forum.
Ensure
- you have driving permission for both countries, not only driving license, example Germany.
- rental contract allows taking the car cross-border to Czech.
- you have motorway vignette for Czech.
Karlsbad/Karlovy Vary , Elbogen/Loket ,Franzensbad/Frantiskovy Lazne Eger/Cheb (German/Czech)
and bit further south Marienbad/Marianske Lazne
are towns I can recommend to visit in the northwestern part of the Czech Republic
See website https://www.visitczechia.com/en-us/destinations/west-bohemia
These towns are between 20 and 60 km southeast of the mentioned Asch/As area
Lazne the Czech word for Spa so thats what the towns are Worth visiting
Cheb with historic center and Loket with a castle and small historic center
Thanks again Mark. The vignette is not required for the portion of Czechia what we are planning on traveling but I will need to check with my rental company.
Thank you uwe04, I found many hotels with pools and spas, now I understand the "Lazne" connection. Overall, most hotels were more costly than Germany, so we decided to stay on the DE side. I think Asch/As will be the main town as we simply are making a quick route through the area (half day)... just to say that we visited Czechia.
Yes we didnt need a Vignette on the roads to Karlovy Vary from Waldsassen. Local roads are free anyway as far as I remember
Hi,
If history is of any interest to you when doing this drive, crossing into Cheb, the former Eger, was the first town in the Sudetenland, that region around the town was called Egerland.
In July of 1973 my train from Nuremberg stopped for 30 mins or more in Cheb for border and passport and visa check. Yes, the visa was required for entry.. I had obtained that visa needed to cross into the country in Paris. Very interesting experience with the armed guards and dogs on the platform. You knew it was not a scene in a movie.
Never been to CSSR during Communist times but cross GDR and East Berlin and it was a great experience after 1990 just to walk across the fields from Bavaria to Maria Loretto Abbey south of Cheb without even seeing border guards and all was totally legal
If you have any chance go to Franzensbad/Frantiskovy Lazne or Cheb/Eger 15 to 20km south of Asch and back to Germany from there Its worth it (30km to the Autobahn A93 to Regensburg from Eger/Cheb 160 km to Nürnberg A93 and A6)
Not until August of 1984 on that trip did I see the GDR , ie on a guided only East Berlin bus tour, which had its passport check at Checkpoint Charlie. I didn't know of Bahnhof Friedrichstrasse then.
We were allowed to get off the bus at Treptow, the site of the huge Soviet war memorial, (obviously) , at which time a large group of French soldiers were also there in their dress uniforms. Most of all, I wanted to see the Brandenburg Gate from the eastern side which is usually depicted in photos and historical paintings.
The restaurant at the Chodovar Brewery in the old beer cellar is unique. Good beer too.
