Driving from Munich to Salzburg, potential stops / Konigsee / Hallstatt / Salzburg to Fussen

Hello! We are driving from Munich to Salzburg early August, and would like to know if there are any stops that may be worth it for a few hours on the way. How about Munich to Hallstatt, spend a few hours there, have lunch, and then to Salzburg?

In addition, we have two full days in Salzburg. One day to stay in the city. The second day, we were planning a day trip to Konigsee and then have booked a tour at 1:15 PM to Eagle's nest. Wonder if both Konigsee and the timetable to our tour is doable?

On the way from Salzburg to Fussen, any stops to recommend? Or better to arrive earlier to Fussen and visit some of the sites there (like Highland 179, or something else)

Thanks very much in advance!

Assuming you are not arriving by plane to Munich and immediately renting a car:

Yes, you could drive Munich to Hallstatt, spend some time, then return to Salzburg. Hopefully your luggage will not be visible.

You should be able to do Konigsee that morning. Get an early start. The first boat is at 8 am. After the boat tour, the town is worth exploring.

Thanks! Is it a general warning about theft or specific to the route we are taking?

The Herrenchiemsee is a castle on an island on the Chiemsee. It is Mad Ludwig's last castle and is based on Versailles complete with the hall of mirrors. It is close to the autobahn and fright on your route from Munich to Salzburg.

A general warning about theft. Anytime you leave your luggage visible in the car you are inviting trouble. How awful would it be if your luggage was stolen? Don’t leave anything in the car that would ruin your trip if it was stolen.

Highly recommend getting an early start from Munich and stopping in Hallstatt on the way to Salzburg. Just did that and it was well worth the trip. Konigsee as well.

Hallstatt is NOT on the way between Munich and Salzburg. Coming from Munich, it is well beyond Salzburg.

Hallstatt is a detour for another day. Way beyond Salzburg.

Herrenchiemsee is on the way to Salzburg. Just south of Herrenchiemsee is another stop that's on the way - Aschau and the Kampenwand Mountain lift. Enjoy the views and take a hike once you're up top.

Dont forget to have Weisswurstfrühstück (bavarian style Breakfast)at Luitpold am See in Prien

But please leave some space in your stomach, because it is recommended to eat smoked fish on Fraueninsel.

I really hate driving Duetsche Autobahns A99 and A8 and go around when I can. Lots of traffic and prone to STAU. Consider a longer route on secondary roads to Salzburg. A stop in Wasserburg am Inn or Traunstein. A stop on the east side of the Chiemsee? See the country. Bayern school vacation this year is 31 July to 11 September. Personally, I would stay off the Autobahn from mid Friday thru Sunday. Same thing on the way to Füssen. Take a look at sights along secondary routes to Füssen. UNESCO Wieskirche? From Füssen if you have the time go south into the Lechtal (Maybe for you: Hängebrücke Holzgau. Check out some of the videos). I think you will have to decide either the Kehlsteinhaus or the Königssee with a 1:15 PM time. Neues Schloss Herrenchiemsee is great, but I think you need at least a half a day. No telling how packed the boats and Schloss tours will be. Or, overnight in Prien am Chiemsee. Munich to Hallstatt to Salzburg is doable, but not sure how enjoyable the trip would be. At least a whole day in my mind.
