Driving from Munich to Lugano Switzerland

We are planning to drive from Munich to Lugano. I wonder how the roads are across the Alps from Munich into Switzerland. I see several routes are options but would like to know what the roads are like, especially in terms of hairpin curves and steep drop-offs

It is Autobahn all the way through Switzerland. Boringly easy drive.

See map here: https://www.ezv.admin.ch/dam/ezv/en/dokumente/archiv/2011/07/karte_der_abgabepflichtigennationalstrassen.pdf.download.pdf/map_of_the_nationalroadssubjecttotaxation.pdf

Coming from Munich, you will probably enter Switzerland at St Margrethen (top right of map), then south on the A13 all the way.
This goes through the San Bernadino tunnel under the highest point in the Alps. This is a single tunnel, and there are tailbacks at busy periods.
Alternatively if you want hairpin bends and steep drop-offs, you could go "over the top" on the San Bernadino Pass road. Go to YouTube and search for "San Bernadino Pass".

You will also have to buy a "Vignette" (toll sticker) at the border (if the car does not already have one) to cover your use of the Autobahns, cost CHF 40.

I assume you're aware that you'll require the compulsory International Driver's Permit for driving in Austria and Italy. These are used in conjunction with your home DL so you'll have to pack both. You'll also need to be very vigilant to avoid the ZTL (limited traffic) zones which exist in many Italian towns, as there are hefty fines for each pass through these.

And if you plan to pick up the car in Germany and drop it off in Switzerland or Italy, you will almost certainly pay an extremely high international drop charge.
