Driving from Garmish to Salzburg over 1 -1,5 days. Suggestions of where to stop or places to see?

We will be staying 2 days (Monday midday to Wednesday midday) between Reutte, Fussen and Garmish seeing castles, Zugspitze and Partnach gorge (hopefully). Then plan on driving to Salzburg to experience the beautiful area (Bavaria & Alps). We might stop at Eagle's Nest but am confused with the cost and website. If it matters, we are driving from Wednesday midday to Friday (Salzburg).
How long should we leave for Zugspitze by cogged train? I am debating on cutting out staying in Salzburg Thursday night for staying in region because we are drivng to Dachau on Friday AM. Thanks for all your help.

Unless you are a WWII buff I could not recommend the Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus). You could be waiting hours for the bus and elevator to the top. If the weather is nice an electric boat trip on the Königssee http://www.koenigssee.com/ (one of my favorites) in the Nationalpark Berchtesgaden or a drive on the Rossfeld Panoramastrasse http://www.rossfeldpanoramastrasse.de/ would be nicer.

Depending on how long you want to spend, the Zugspitze takes about 4 hours for an unhurried visit. I recommend that you take the train up and the gondola down for some good views. One note - if you do take it, make sure you take the gondola that goes down to the German side of the mountain since there is also one that goes to Austria. From the base of the gondola you'll have to also take a local train a few miles to get back to Garmish. That method will require about 2+ hours of travel time round trip depending on how long you have to wait for the various modes of transportation. If you plan on about 4 hours you'll have plenty of time to walk around, take pictures, eat, etc. There is a restaurant at the top where you can get food and drinks.

mchpp - Thank you. That makes sense about Eagle's Nest. I am interested in the history but not that much and do not have the extra time and money to justify when so much more to see. Thanks again.

Garmisch is on the German/Austrian border.

Why don't you just drop down into Austria and take in some of their incredible vistas of The Alps.

It's autobahn/motorway all the way to Salzburg, and it's just a couple of hour's drive from Innsbruck. There's so much to see between those cities.

I am driving up through Tyrol, Italy through Innsbruck, then Reutte, Fussen, Oberamagau then Garmish. From there heading to Salzburg. Do you think I should drop back down to Innsbruck?
