I hate to be one more American, creating one more thread about these castles but it appears I am part of the slim few that will have a car and doing this. Maybe that's great? Maybe that's stupid? Either way, we will be driving onward to Mittenwald (with a stop at Tegelberg Cable Car) after the castle tours so car it is.
As it stands right now, we will be staying in Fussen and driving to the castles. Will be doing Hohenschwangau Castle tour first at 9:55AM, then Neuschwanstein Castle tour second at 1:55PM (planning to purchase the Konigsticket €43 to do both).
Looking around the website and consulting Google Maps, it appears I will make the 6min drive from Fussen to Parkplatz P4 and park there (website states parking for P1-P4 costs "from € 10,00" assuming that is cash only). The website also states to be on site 1.5 hours before the tour so that means arrive at the parking lot by 8AM. Since I overly plan everything and can't handle the anxiety of being rushed (or worse yet, late) we will leave Fussen approx. 7AM.
Take the 30 minute walk up to Hohenschwangau Castle puts us up there at 8:30AM. Tour of Hohenschwangau begins at 9:55AM. Tour takes 30 minutes so that puts us at roughly 10:30AM. Faster walking back downhill but let's assume 30 minutes again, puts us in the parking lot at 11AM.
At that point, we can either take the shuttle bus for $3.50 (round trip, cash only) up to Neuschwanstein Castle for the 1:55PM tour -or- do the 40 minute walk up to the castle. Assuming worst case, let's call it a 1 hour walk up to the Neuschwanstein so need to start that walk by 11:30AM. Begin tour at 1:55PM. The 45 minute tour takes us to approx 2:45PM. Walk to Marienbrucke after tour (add in 30min for walk there/back + view), then the walk or shuttle down to the parking lot (approx. 1 hour for the walk), should put us back to the car at approx. 4:30PM.
Does that all sound correct? Have I overly planned enough? :)
Appreciate feedback on that first question. Pretty much know the answer to the second.
*I should note, we're rather fit adults who hike so going uphill won't present many physical challenges.
