In looking at the map, there are several options and I am looking for suggestions for things to see along the way. I will have about a day and a half to two days to make the trip.
I am interested in Cologne Cathedral and Heidelberg Castle, but they are on different routes. I'm open to other cities as well, such as Hamburg, Bremen, Hannover, etc. But with such a short window of time, I would like to maximize it.

I would suggest dropping Hannover regardless if your time span were 1.5 days or 15 days to cross from Berlin to Bitburg. Depending on which route you take, there are some worthy places depending on your interests.
I should say either Erfurt, Eisenach or the Harz mountain region (particularly Quedlinburg or Wernigerode) would make a good stop-over. You could also consider brief stops in Bad Hersfeld, Alsfeld, Marburg or Wetzlar, all of which are attractive towns
