Dresden to Rothenburg ob der Tauber

My son & I are planning to spend 2 days in each city in June as part of a 2-week trip and have rail passes. My question relates to getting from Dresden to Rothenburg. I see that we can take a train from Dresden to Rothenburg which will take about 6 hours. There are also overnight trains which take anywhere from 10-12 hours and leave in the early evening or later at 10pm.

Instead of "wasting" 6 hours of precious daylight hours in the train, would it be better to take the overnight train and thus also save the hotel cost for that 2nd day in Dresden? I don't see any downsides to this as my son & I don't plan on doing much in the evenings. The overnight trains do have "stops". Would we need to actually change trains here? One of them is at 12:45am, so I would hate to have to get up in the middle of the night if that is the case. I can't tell from the train schedule what we'd need to do.

For overnight trains, does Deutsche Bahn consider that to be using up 1 or 2 days?

I am also confused as to the different train designations and which are part of the rail pass program: I believe that ICE and CNL are part, but I don't know about RE, RB and SBA. Any help and suggestions on which to take or avoid would be much appreciated!

TIA,
Cindy

Hi, Cindy. Any overnight options that come up between Dresden and R'burg will involve changes and/or layovers in the wee wee hours of the morning. I wouldn't even consider it.

If you leave Dresden by at least 15:20 or 16:20 you can reach Würzburg, at the northern end of the Romantic Road, by 19:30 or 20:30. I would spend the night there near the station - then see a bit of W'burg in the morning - maybe the RESIDENZ? - followed by a trip along the Main River route via Ochsenfurt and Marktbreit (nice towns for stopovers) and Steinach (change trains) and eventually Rothenburg for a night there. R'burg is small and doesn't require 2 nights or even a full day IMO. But you might see a tad more of R'burg the next morning if you wish before leaving for wherever.

I'd use the railpass day for the trip to W'burg and a separate Bayern Ticket for W'burg-Rothenburg. Save the railpass day.

RE and RB trains are regional trains that can be used with a rail pass. SBA??

Go to www.bahn.com to see the schedule and you will see that taking a night train would be a very bad idea. You would need to first get a train to Leipzig at 10:15 pm and change to the night train leaving Leipzig at 11:59 pm that will dump you at Frankfurt South Station at 3:59 am. Then hang around the station for 1 1/2 hours waiting to get a train to Wuerzburg, then a train to Steinach, then a train to Rothenburg arriving at 8:49 am. Doesn't sound very restful to me.
Your pass is good on all RE, RB trains. Never heard of SBA trains. Oh, if you take the night train, your pass only covers a seat. Sleeping compartment is extra, but you only have 4 hours on the train.

I've never heard of SBA in Germany. I think you mean S-Bahn which is the German name for all-stations trains in urban and suburban areas. S-Bahn trains are covered by regional passes.

I think using the night train would mean paying for a very expensive hotel room for a short night. The night train from Dresden goes to Frankfurt in 7 hours, then you'll come back by non-night-trains to Rothenburg in 3½ - 5 hours. And you have spend ½ hour in Frankfurt changing trains at 4 o'clock in the morning. BTW, the SBA? - I see an STR. That's a streetcar.

If you board an overnight train after 7 PM, and it reaches it's final destination after 4 AM, even if you get off earlier, you only have to fill in the second day of your rail pass, and you can use that pass later that day. It's called the "7 PM rule". So, in this case, 1 day.

BTW, it has to be a legitimate night train for the 7 PM rule to apply. If it takes a non-night-train to get to the night train earlier that day, even after 7 PM, that train doesn't count for the following day. You either have to use another day of your rail pass or pay for it separately.

So we can understand you question better, what booking website are you using?

I am using the bahn.de site to check for fares.

When I searched today, I didn't see the SBA but did find a STB but it actually defined it as Süd-Thüringen-Bahn, so either I saw something that wasn't there or it was something of this sort.

Thanks for the advice so far. It sounds like the overnighter is definitely NOT the way we want to go!

Sud-Thuringen-Bahn sounds like it's one of the local routes in Germany that are now operated by private companies under contract from regional government, rather than Deutsche Bahn. They still accept regional passes.

Yes, boarded an STB last year by mistake and ended up in Petty Coat Juncktion (aka Ilmenau), but it was a mighty pretty ride.
