We are contemplating a road trip from Dresden to Paris.
We have 9 days to do this. It would be this year (2020) in late June.
Does anyone have any ideas about this? Perhaps ideas on where to stop, what to see, what routes to take ..and places to stay along the way. We are going to rent a car. Any ideas on that?
We have these 9 days in between one trip that ends in Dresden and another trip that starts 9 days later in Paris. We are trying to figure out a fun and interesting way to fill that time.

How about Quedlinburg, Cologne, Boppard, Antwerp, Bruges, Strasbourg, Paris?
However, I don't like or recommend long road trips in Europe. The car is more of a burden than an instrument of All-American Open-Road freedom. Especially in high season.

I wouldn't suggest taking that road trip because of the rental car drop off fees in another country. It'll be too expensive.
You could rent the car in Dresden and go over to Leipzig and toward Koblenz--visiting along the way. You could also take in the Cologne Duomo--quite a sight. Then turn the car in at Koblenz (on the Rhine River) and take the train into France into Paris.
We'll be in Dresden the end of March and are going to rent a car to drive to Auschwitz and return it in Berlin.

Consider dropping off the car on the German side of the border to save on extra rental fees. Perhaps at Kehl, near Strasbourg, or maybe at Cologne or Mannheim if you're further north and looking to catch a fast train to Paris. Train tickets aren't free, but at least compare the prices for the different lengths of car rental.

Good advice on dropping rental car in another country. It is usually very expensive.
A direct route between Dresden and Paris is not so great, so you will have to choose between going north or south.
South
You could visit Nurenberg, Munich, Fussen/Garmisch, Interlakken, Switzerland, Strasbourg, France then on to Paris.
North
Bamberg, Wurzburg, Rhine Valley (Rudsheim or Cologne), then on to Trier, Germany, Luxembourg, Brussels, Brugges and Paris.
