Dresden or Munich on the way to Berlin?

I'm planning my first trip to Europe and my original plan was to go to Munich from Prague and stay there a few days. After talking to a few people they mentioned possibly cancelling Munich and going to Dresden from Prague. Dresden looks like an amazing city but is it worth cancelling a trip to Munich?

Dresden was perhaps the most beautiful city in Europe until the end of WWII--when the Allied bombs did serious damage. It wasn't until recent years that the original grandeur has been restored. And it's on the train route from Prague to Berlin--maybe 2 hrs. from Prague. We had relatives from there--who's 93 years young and escaped Hitler's wrath with the SS literally chasing them all the way to Hamburg where they boarded a ship to NYC.
If you're still going to Berlin, Dresden would be a worthy stop. If you're not going to Berlin, skip Dresden and go on to Munich--an important big European city.

Dresden is on your way from Prague to Berlin so logistically is a better choice. If your question would be just Munich or Dresden then I would say Munich.

I agree with David. Munich and Dresden are both worthwhile, and VERY different. If you're going from Prague to Berlin, Dresden is a midpoint between the two, and only about 2.5 hours from each. Munich, on the other hand is a significant detour. So if you're going to Berlin from Prague, see Dresden this time, and Munich on another trip.

However, if you're not going to Berlin, you can choose based on which one draws you more. Read about and watch videos about each one, and decide. Rick's videos are here (click down and choose Germany): https://www.ricksteves.com/watch-read-listen/video/tv-show
