Dresden - Museums & Mondays (day trip?)

I’ll be in Dresden in a few weeks from Friday evening departing Tuesday morning. Museum-wise I am planning on seeing the Green Vault, Albertinum, New Vault, maybe Transport Museum. Other than that, I just want to soak in the city and enjoy the place.

My problem looks like it might be Monday. It appears many museums are closed which gives me the impression it might just be a bit dead in general. Does anyone have any “must-sees” among the secondary tier of museums that may be open Mondays? Is a day trip to Leipzig or Gorlitz worth looking into? It feels like the museum pass might be overkill unless I use it for Saturday and Sunday, but has anyone found it worthwhile?

I don't remember what days we did what, but we did take our rental car to Leipzig for a day and absolutely loved it!

No, Monday is not dead in general. Maybe you noticed that the Royal Palace is open on Mondays? Meaning the Green Vaults, the Armory, collection of prints and drawings and some other museums. No idea about the museum pass, sorry.

Definitely not among the "secondary" tier of museums but in the "first" tier is the Military History Museum - and it is open on Mondays, permanent exhibit even free after 6 pm (open till 9 pm). https://mhmbw.de/

You might be interested in this one: https://www.bautzner-strasse-dresden.de/en It is open on Mondays as well.
A very interesting and sombering visit of the former Russian and East German secret service building including prison cells.

Maybe this small exhibit is of interest for you (free): https://www.slub-dresden.de/en/visit/exhibitions-book-museum
I love the Maya Codex in particular.

If you think about an excursion I highly recommend Meißen - Albrechtsburg castle and cathedral are open on Mondays.

And the porcelain manufacture is open as well: https://www.meissen.com/en/tourism

Görlitz is one of my favourites, but on Mondays all the museums are closed.

A day trip to Leipzig is an option for just wandering around and peeking into the main churches, but I am afraid that the most important museums are closed on Mondays, too. (Runde Ecke, the Stasi museum, is open.)

@ibrenn That’s amazing, thank you! I was obviously getting a bit confused with some of these. Knowing I can see that group on Monday is great. I’m very interested in your other recommendations as well! They look very interesting and were not on my radar. Thank you for the detailed reply.
