Downtown Munich accomodations

We have 2 days, 2 nights in Munich before flying home to the US. We would like to be centrally located for walking, exploring, regional restaurants, etc and also taking the train to Dachau, and getting a taxi to the airport for an early flight. For better or worse, we are missing Oktobefest by a few days. Any hotel recommendations?

Hotel Metropol. Close to the train station but on a quiet street. Fabulous breakfast. Large rooms, some with balcony (no views). Great shower.

Munich has excellent public transportation so don’t get discouraged if you can’t find a hotel right on Marienplatz. We were not centrally located this time and it was kind of nice to be out of the fray and away from crowds at night. I can understand the desire to be in the heart of the action, though. Letting you know it can work without being centrally located due to Munich’s fine public transportation.

People here recommend Hotel Torbräu, Hotel Lux or Hotel Am Viktualienmarkt.
This is really the old town an close to Marienplatz.

I just spent 4 nights in Munich at the Platzl. It was lovely and right off the Marienplatz. We walked there from the train station. We saw all the very well-reviewed hotels right there but the area is just not very nice. I was very very glad we didn't stay there.

We hung out in Munich with another RS poster who DID stay at the Metropol. Hopefully she'll weigh in and give you her feedback.

We paid $270 a night with breakfast at the Platzl. We had a deluxe room. Other rooms were about $50 a night cheaper.

I stayed at Motel One a nice little secret that only the Germans know. While it doesn't have any extra features, if you get Special Room you will get room for two and a nice shower and sink. I stayed at the Sendlinger Tor one and while there was construction during the day it's close to the U-Bahn and S-Bahn.

Plus people here like to meet the locals and most of the customers here are German businesspeople or families.Usually around 110 euros/night.

We were in Munich this past December and stayed at both Hotel Lux and Hotel am Viktualientmarkt (2nd stay there). Both were excellent and I would stay at either one again in a heartbeat, FWIW. Hotel Lux was my favorite of the two though as the rooms were not quite as sterile and the breakfast was exceptional. The manager was a delight as well. Then in the evenings when we would return, their bar was wonderful. The atmosphere is hard to describe, but it has a lot of character, the place is not wild, but they have a wonderful list of cocktails so each night we would come back and try a new one.

Hotel Eder is centrally located. Some of the rooms are on the small side, but it’s a cozy family run place with a great breakfast buffet.

We are the RS poster that Valerie refers to above and we stayed 4 nights at the Hotel Metropol. Absolutely no complaints about the hotel itself, it was wonderful, and the street the hotel sits on is fine. It is close to the train station which is not a great area and you have to walk through a gauntlet of homeless and beggars to get to the Marionplatz.

I stayed at KINGS Hotel Center last summer and loved it. Excellent breakfast, friendly staff, great location near grocery stores and restaurants, quick walk to the main train station.
