I have traveled to Europe a couple of times and used the Eurail pass because I was there for several days. This time I'm not going to buy the pass because I will only have 3 days I'll be on trains. Do I need to get reservations for the individual tickets? Are they crowded this time of year? Any advice would help.
The easiest and cheapest(27/1, 36/2) solution for Munich-Salzburg is a bayernticket for the regional train BRB. There is no seat reservation. For the RailJet Salzburg - Vienna and Vienna - Prague I would reserve seats.
Good advice from sla019. I just did the Munich to Salzburg train on the Bayern ticket on Tuesday to keep the flexibility of a delayed flight arrival. It was crowded enough, although the two of us did get seats. Unless you enjoy standing for your rail travel, I would reserve. The trains have been busy all week, especially when traveling between Christmas market destinations.
First, tickets prices go up as your travel date approaches. So, an advance purchase will save you money if you are sure of your travel dates and times. The DB and OBB reservation sites/apps will inform you if a full train is expected.
Second, seat reservations make the trip more comfortable. I have done Munich - Vienna & Vienna - Prague and glad I had reserved seats on two very crowded trains. Even if the train isn't full, the open seat you pick may be reserved by someone else, either at departure or at the next stop. If this happens you will have to move.
BTW, saw a beautiful picture of snow on the Charles Bridge this AM.
