Do I need to take my driver’s license while traveling in Germany

I am traveling in Germany for 14 days by air, train & bus. I have my passport as well as global entry card, do I need to bring my driver’s license as well? (Taking Uber to & from airport)

Will you be driving? No? Then no.

What about to and from your home airport? Driving then? No? Then no.

You won't need it unless you're driving, or have some other need for secondary ID (as a foreigner, passport is king). However, it still might come in handy.

Once in a while you may find yourself in a situation where you need to "leave an ID" as security - this happened to me a few weeks ago on an island in Estonia, where I wanted to rent a bicycle. They guy renting them just asked for my ID. I handed him my Washington state driver's license (not wanting to hand over my passport, which would have been way more problematic if he/it disappeared). He looked at it, shrugged, and gave us two bicycles, which we rode away on. Even if you're not expecting to rent a bicycle (I hadn't planned to either), I've had the same "leave your ID" situations a couple other times on previous trips (for an audio guide, etc.).

Unless you're highly prone to losing things, I don't see any reason to leave it at home. It's not like it weighs a lot...

Thank you for all your replies, I guess we’ll go ahead & take them as better safe than sorry. My thoughts are that all these “ids” will be together in neck wallet, so if are lost are stolen all are gone. But will take photocopies!

Just to second David's reply. It's common that you have to leave some ID when you get an audioguide, and I leave my driver's license. He's right that you don't always know in advance when you'll get an audioguide. So, I always have it, even though I'm not driving.

Passport is enough unless you want to rent a car. Important: A national driving license is not equal to driving permission in all countires.

Uber is not working in Germany the way you know it from US - illegal business model in existing law.
