Direct Night Train from Munich to Berlin

Hi,
I will be in Munich in August and want to get to Berlin. As I do not have a lot of time, I thought taking a night train would be a time saver. Searching the Bahn website - it is confusing for me - there does not seem to be a direct train - meaning one that does not make stops.

The best I found was one that stopped in Gottingen.

Are there no direct, without having to get off the train, options?

Also is the couchette comfortable? is the sleeper that much better? what is the difference between a one person in Economy Double compartment and one person in Economy Single compartment ?

And in those routes where I have to get off multiple times - do I get a sleeper on each train?

Thanks so much

There are no direct night trains between Munich and Berlin, and after mid December, there will be no night trains in Germany period, unless the Austrian Railway, OEBB, decides to take some on.

Edit- The connection via Goettingen are both ICE trains with no sleepers. If you really must have a sleeper, take the connection via Mannheim where you board the CNL just before midnight and can sleep until you arrive in Berlin at 7:23.

a direct train - meaning one that does not make stops.

A direct train (connection, really) is one without any changes of trains. Trains without stops are rare.

Here is just one of many direct train connections from Munich to Berlin, ICE 1584, leaving Munich at 15:18, getting to Berlin Hbf 6¼ hrs later at 21:33.

The last direct connection of the day leaves Munich at 17:19, getting into Berlin Hbf at 23:33.

This would be a better option - the transfer does not take place until the next morning - that gives a solid 8 hrs on the CNL:

IC 61418 City Night Line, Intercity Direction: Hamburg-Altona
Sleeper and couchette train (only CNL40418), Subject to compulsory reservation (only CNL40418),
Bicycles conveyed - subject to reservation , Number of bicycles conveyed limited , snacks and
beverages available from sleeper/couchette attendant (only CNL40418), City Night Line

(only CNL40418), 2nd class only (only IC 61418)
+ 1 Day
Hannover Hbf arr 06:58 8

Transfer time 33 min.

Hannover Hbf dep 07:31 9 ICE 541 Intercity-Express Direction: Berlin Hbf (tief)

This is only a 6 hour train ride. Leave early in the morning and you are there by noon if not before if you leave at 05:15. It is great when you are in a country to actually see it. It is a comfortable ride in an ICE with no stops.

Would much rather sleep in a hotel then on a train. My only experience with a night train was a disaster. Neither my husband or I got a wink of sleep. We were so exhausted the next day, we couldn't enjoy our sightseeing at all.

Hi,

As pointed out, there is no more Munich to Berlin CNL night train...unfortunately but the Munich to Hannover Hbf night train. I took that over a month ago on 8 June, boarded in Munich. It was the IC train , paid 4.50 Euro for the seat reservation, no sleeper or couchette. The coach I was in was pretty full but not packed. The Munich-Hannover night train does makes stops, I slept through most of them since I was getting off at Hannover Hbf to transfer to Berlin Hbf.

You get off at the terminus, Hannover Hbf and change to Berlin Hbf on the ICE. No need to stop at Göttingen.

Flights from Munich to Berlin cost from 120 to 200€. That's an attractive alternative to the night train.

The train costs as little as 33 €. Add in the cost of getting to each of the airports (train or taxi) and the time involved (Munich is at least a 45 min. train ride from the airport) and you haven't saved much time at all and paid a whole lot more for your trip.

I would definitely agree - flying would not be a good option

  • 1 Day Berlin Hbf (tief) 09:06

OR

(incl. 1 Surcharge)

one person in 5-berth compartment 111,00 EUR* 263,00 EUR*

Sleeper
one person in Economy Double compartment breakfast incl. 161,00 EUR* 303,00 EUR*

one person in Economy Single compartment breakfast incl. 201,00 EUR* 344,00 EUR*

one person in Deluxe Double compartment breakfast incl. 161,00 EUR** 303,00 EUR**

one person in Deluxe Single compartment breakfast incl. 201,00 EUR** 344,00 EUR**

All of my posts have been about taking a day train and not a night train, which is why I used times like 05:15, which gets you to Berlin before noon.

I used Deutsche Bahn to find prices, using a random day in August. Train takes between 6.15 min. and 6.30 min.

No way would I pay that amount for flying to Berlin from MUC, glad I took the IC night train. Flying is not the option.

The original idea of the OP was a night train, as taking a night train would be a time saver.

I do not advocate the night train either. But if you want to take it because you want to save your precious awake time, the day train isn't an alternative. The flight is. With S-Bahn transfer from Munich city centre, check-in-out and S-Bahn transfer in Berlin, it takes 3 hours. The day train takes about 6.5 hours.

THANK YOU ALL so much,

I really do appreciate all the help. Thank you.

I had meant a train connection where you don't have to change trains too frequently. i should have been clearer.

I think I will either take the train as mentioned by Christie at 22:50 . or
The ICE at 5:15 am the next am as mentioned by Ms. Jo.

I kind of have a romantic notion of a sleeper train (murder on the orient express) that I guess I need to dispel.

I wish I had more time to see Berlin!!!

Hi,

The night train mentioned by Christie dep at 2250 is exactly the one I took Munich to Hannover, 8 June 2016, changing there to Berlin Hbf. It's the most direct night connection.

With S-Bahn transfer from Munich city centre, check-in-out and S-Bahn
transfer in Berlin, it takes 3 hours

Not in this world!

The quickest S-Bahn to the Munich airport takes at least 40 minutes, and that is if you arrive on the platform when the S8 gets there. It probably takes longer.

Air Berlin shows their flight to Berlin Tegel takes 1 hour 10 minutes.

The bus from Tegel to downtown takes 20 minutes.

That's 2 hours 10 minutes without any preboard time in Munich or deplaning time (when was the last time you got off the plane the instant it arrived) to find ground trainsportation at Tegel.

If it only takes you 10 minutes in Tegel to get off the plane and get on the bus (unlikely), then 3 hours will only give you 40 minutes in Munich to check in, go through security, and get to your gate.

I've flown out of MUC many times, and I always get to the airport 2½ hours before flight time. Some people have criticized that as cutting it too close. I've usually had a few minutes wait, but the last time they were already boarding when I got to the gate.

Bottom line, flying will take at least 4 hours, closer to 5. It will take a little longer with a direct train, but the train will probably cost less, and you'll save a lot of airport hassle.
