I understand that there is renovation being done on both museums so they are charging less admission due to some closures of the museums. This will be going on until 2018. Has anyone been to either one of these museums this year? Is it worth going to either one of the museums? I will be on the GAS tour and have free time in Munich and was thinking of going to one of the museums. Your input or advice and what you saw would be appreciated.
If you can read German you can find here:
https://www.pinakothek.de/besuch/alte-pinakothek/energetische-sanierung-2014-2018
an overwiev of rooms presently accessible or closed.
The website mentioned by the previous poster is also in English (among other languages). Just click the down arrow by the German flag and scroll down.
I did click on English and it brought me to another page, so German is the only way to read the page. I am going to try to use an app that translates into German or wait till I get to Germany. If no one can answer my questions.
This is what I could get when I went to the page mentioned above.....on my phone goohle automatically translated to English for me.....
"In order to ensure the end of 2017 a timely completion of the renovation, the building sections have been reorganized. The gallery spaces VII to IX upstairs are open again from 25 March 2016th
Please note: The rooms I to III (Old German and Old Dutch painting) were closed on April 18, 2016. Albrecht Durer "Self-portrait" is to see but as part of the interim presentation in the cabinets 4-7 downstairs East.
Please also note the following graphs. Thank you for your patience and understanding."
The Alte Pinakothek is organized by the origin of the art and century. Take a look at the Saalübersicht table in the middle of the page which countries and centuries you are interested in and check the floor plans whether they are accessible during your stay. Red means "closed".
It's just the Alte Pinakothek that's being renovated, the Neue Pinakothek and Pinakothek der Moderne are fully open.
My friend Jan was just there today! They went through the Alte Pinakothek and were able to see everything. They are giving a discounted rate because parts of the museum are under construction. You should still go!
I want to thank everyone for their responses. It has been most helpful. Looking forward to my stay in Munich and going to the museums! Thank you.
