Deutsche Bahn Advice: Frankfurt-Bacharach-Trier

Hi Everyone-
My husband and I are going on the Rick Steves Germany-Austria-Switzerland trip this summer. The tour starts in Trier, and we are flying into Frankfurt a day early and spending the extra evening in Bacharach. I think we know what we need to do in terms of travel from Frankfurt to Bacharach to Trier, but would appreciate confirmation! Since we are hooking up with the tour in Trier, these are the only trips we have to take care of on our own, so I didn't think a more inclusive rail pass made sense in our situation.

Our plan is to buy the tickets for the Frankfurt to Bacharach leg at the Frankfurt Airport station, since the RS Guidebook says that that trip is entirely within the bounds of a regional transport network and have to be bought on the day of travel. I'm not worried about that piece as we'll be at the airport and I'm sure there will be plenty of staff around if we had any questions. For the trip the next day from Bacharach to Trier, we'd like to buy ahead of time, as I understand the Bacharach station isn't staffed and I would like the peace of mind to know that we aren't going to have any finicky ticket machine issues or the like. I think we can go ahead and buy two Rheinland-Pfalz-Tickets online for that date and print them off here at home to take with us. Is that right? And then we can choose whatever time/combination of trains works best for us to get to Trier in time to meet the tour group.

Assuming I have that right, is there anything special we need to do with the tickets when we board the train? Do I need to activate it or validate it somehow in advance, or just have it ready to show the conductor?

Thank you so much in advance for your help!

Best,
Peggy

"...buy two Rheinland-Pfalz-Tickets online..."

The R-P ticket will work. But you can just buy it at the AIRPORT station at the same time you buy the ticket to Bacharach. All you need to do is make sure it is for the following day. You may need to sign the R-P ticket, but other than that, just keep it on you and present it when asked - and make sure you ride only the regional trains (after 9 am if it's a weekday.) When you use the DB site to check train connections, specify "only local transport" so that you pull up only regional trains (do the same for the ticket to Bacharach.)

The ticket to Bacharach is an RMV ticket.

Buy just one... The Gruppentageskarte 5 personen is a day pass for €34.50 that will cover 2 adults for the trip. Edit: please ignore this recommendation completely. See Lee's post below.

Look for a ticket machine with an RMV logo:

You can buy the R-P ticket from any machine with a DB logo.

Buy one ticket for two, it's €29 instead of 2 x 24. You can use any regional train (not ICE, IC, EC) after 9am on workdays, all day on weekends.

I believe SLA019 means 9 a.m., not p.m.

Correct. Sorry!

I'm confused, Russ. Why do you want them to buy a Gruppentageskarte for only 2 people? A single person ticket (Einzelfahrkarte) is only 11,95€ per person or 23,90€ for two people. Unless they plan on going back towards Frankfurt after they check into the hotel, a Tageskarte would not be needed.

You aren't confused at all, Lee. You're sure I was wrong, and you are completely correct.

Please follow Lee's advice for these tickets, Peggy. That's what I'd do.

(Now then, where's the coffee pot?)

Maybe Russ was thinking of your doing more train travel that day.

If you wanted to take the train to Bingen after you checked in and take the K-D boat back down the river to Bacharach, that train travel would be covered by a Tageskarte, and a Gruppentageskarte is less than two individual Tageskarten.

But that particular Tageskarte, Single or Gruppe, is only valid between FRA and Bacharach. You could not use it, for instance, to go from Bacharach to St. Goar, or vice versa.

Nope. Just wasn't thinking, or not enough.
