Deutsch Bahn train ticket Munich-Innsbruck flexible?

Our train on 8-17 has a time of around 12:30 PM nonstop via Mittenwald (we want to take the scenic route) but the 11:30 train I actually wanted via Garmisch seems to have disappeared. Can we take any train that day between those destinations? Say, an earlier train?

Can we get off somewhere like Mittenwald or Garmisch for lunch and get back on another Innsbruck train? Thanks!

Assume by "we" there are 2 of you. Cheapest flexible way would be a 23 EUR Werdenfels ticket to Mittenwald. You can take any train after 9 am weekdays, stop off where you like and take the next train. At Mittenwald, get a 21 EUR flexpreis ticket for 2 to Innsbruck. Take any train.

There are a total of three of us. One adult and two seniors.

Then its 27 EUR for the Werdenfels Ticket, and 31.50 EUR for 3 tickets Mittenwald to Innsbruck.
In order to get the 27 EUR price for the Werdenfels Ticket, you will have to buy from a ticket vending machine. Otherwise there is a 2 EUR service charge to buy at the ticket window.

Sam, I'm not sure they know what you mean by a "flexipreis" ticket, but the Bahn shows the price of a standard, full fare ticket from Mittenwald to Innsbruck of 2 adults, the kind you would buy at a Bahn counter, as 21 EUR. Those tickets are fully flexible. You can make as many stopovers as you want as long as you finish the trip that day.

You don't have to buy that ticket in Mittenwald, you could buy it in Munich, either from the counter or from the same automat from which you buy the Werdenfels-Ticket.

In most cases, there are not senior discounts for train tickets in Germany.

The 11:30 train from Munich to Innsbruck is an EC via Rosenheim and Kufstein; it doesn't take the scenic route via Mittenwald, nor is the Werdenfels-Ticket valid. The regional connection between Munich and Innsbruck via Mittenwald runs basically every two hours, at 32 minutes past the even hour, with a few extra runs on the odd hours 7:32, 13:32, 17:72, etc.

So Lee, if I understand you correctly, I'm on the best train we could be on - no way we would make the 10:32.

no way we would make the 10:32.

You're not arriving at the airport on that day are you?

Edit - Regional trains do not have seat reservations. Just be at the Hbf 20 minutes or so before train time and board when they spot it and you will have your choice of seats.

Actually we are, at 9:10 am.

I'm thinking about getting a driver/guide to pick up our jetlagged selves and to drive us around Munich for a couple of hours, then leave us at the train station.

I know the S-Bahn is easy but my family members not so psyched about the subway.

You're going to be using a Werdenfels ticket to Mittenwald anyway, and it's also valid on all of the S-Bahn lines in Munich (MVV), including the two lines from the airport into town. There is a lot of Munich to see in the area around Marienplatz, but you don't want to go there by car. Use the Werdenfels ticket and go into Marienplatz and see the heart of Munich, then go on to Innsbruck.

Stephen,

From the information posted above, it looks like you have already purchased tickets on August 4 for a flexpreis ticket for three from Munich Hbf to Innsbruck via Mittenwald on August 17 for 102.90 EUR. Is that correct?

If so, a taxi from the airport with a quick tour of central Munich is going to cost about 100 EUR. From taxifarefinder it is about 65 EUR just for a straight ride from the airport to Munich Hauptbahnhof, and it will vary according to traffic. So I am adding on 50% for the driver's extra time for a half hour tour.

The alternative is to take the S-Bahn into Munich as Lee suggested. You say you don't like subways, but the Munich S-Bahn is more like a regular train except it travels underground in central Munich. All the cars are at platform level, so no climbing up and down stairs to board or get off. The main stations like Marienplatz and Hauptbahnhof have both elevators and escalators in the stations, so again, no stairs to contend with. You would need to buy an all-network group day ticket for 23.20 EUR (money saving plan to follow). So if you are landing at 9:10, there is a good chance to be on the 10:24 S-Bahn to Munich. That will get you to Marienplatz at 11:02, take the elevator to street level and take in the view in front of the Neues Rathaus (City Hall). There are side walk cafes fronting the square to relax and have a coffee and a treat. At noon, the Glockenspiel in the Rathaus tower will perform. Expect a large gathering in the square just beforehand to watch the show. Immediately afterward, take the elevator or escalator back down to the S-Bahn station and take the next train going 2 stops to the Hauptbahnhof. Trains go every 2 to 3 minutes that time of day and it is only about a 3 minute ride. At the Hauptbahnhof, again elevators or escalators to the upstairs station. Quickest way is to exit in the direction the train is going. Gleis 27 (track 27) is to the right and is set back a short distance from the main tracks. Your train is at 12:32 and you should be there early to get a choice of seats.

Now, money saving idea. If you did indeed already purchase your tickets as above, you can get them refunded on-line for a 17.50 EUR fee. So you will get back 85.40 EUR on your credit card. Now wait until you arrive in Munich and purchase a 3-person Werdenfels ticket costing 27 EUR, that will be good for the ride to Marienplatz and then the short ride to the Hauptbahnhof and the train as for as Mittenwald. At the same time buy 3 tickets from Mittenwald to Innsbruck for a total of 31.50 EUR. So now you will have spent 17.50 plus 27 plus 31.50 for a total of 76 EUR. The other way would be 102.90 for the ticket to Innsbruck plus 23.20 for the ticket from the airport to Hautbahnhof for a total of 126.10 EUR. This saves you over 50 EUR, which will buy a very nice lunch for the 3 of you in Garmisch or Mittenwald. You might want to use the airport station ticket window for peace of mind, in which case that will cost you another 2 EUR.

@ Lee Do you concur Doctor?

Here is a detailed map of the Hauptbahnhof:

Starting from first of August, there is a ticket called »Werdenfels + Innsbruck« which covers the entire trip from the airport to Innsbruck via Mittenwald for 23 E plus 8 E each additional traveller, i.e. for the three of you 39 E. total:

Scenic route: If the weather is crappy you'll have wished you had taken the EC from Munich Ost direct to Innsbruck and gotten the trip over with, skipping the main Munich station all together. Getting from the S-bahn to the main platforms at the Hauptbahnhof can be busy with people and chaotic for the inexperienced.

Thanks sla019, that's another 19.50 EUR of savings. Google translate works good on the link you posted.

Sam, the tickets Stephen booked are valid from Aug. 17. As they are "Flexpreis", they can be refunded before that date without any fee.
