Deutsch Bahn Refund?

Greetings!

My family (5 of us) were planning to fly to Munich in May and our airline has cancelled our flight due to Covid-19. We have one-way saver fare tickets on Deutsch Bahn from Munich to Venice that we will not be able to use. I have gone to the Deutsch Bahn website and it looks like I can cancel the tickets for a 10 Euro fee and get a travel voucher for future travel. We would rather get a refund as we do not know if we will ever be able to use the tickets in the future with so much uncertainty (re-scheduling this trip with three college age daughters will not be easy). Does anyone know if I can get a refund instead?

Thank you!
Laura

You would only get a refund if DB cancels the train you were scheduled to take. The super saver tickets are Non-refundable. That is why they are significantly cheaper than the other higher price refundable ticket options you were shown. Always read the terms of every ticket you buy before buying and it is a good idea to pay more for refundable tickets nowadays.

Currently, special Corona-virus-related refunds are only published for travel ticketed through April 30, and those are also in the form of a voucher, some good for as long as 3 years (see their FAQ). So even if you wait for new rules next week that allow added options for your travel date, it’s unlikely to be a cash refund. (Note that DB tickets purchased through a US agent do seem to get cash refunds, but there may be other contracts in play there.)

Thanks for the responses. The train tickets were puchased a few months ago and ran about 55 euros a piece at the time, so it is not a major investment. We will take the voucher and hope we can to use it in the future. We just spoke to our airline and got our award mileage re-deposited into our mileage plus account. Our cruise was canceled and we are still waiting for the refund to show up (taking several weeks). Airbnbs, hotels and AutoEurope refunds were processed very quickly. It's been just as much work cancelling all the pieces of our trip as it was to book!

I´m sure if you email Deutsche Bahn explaining your circumstances and why you need a refund they will comply with your request, it will take some time for them to respond however due to the high amount of people they will have to issue with vouchers. Was it a lot of money you will be losing if so you could look into looking at your legal options, i´ve used https://www.sos-verkehrsrecht.de/ before for traffic claims, but they also represent people for claims such as the one you are dealing with
