Deusche Bahn "Rail & Fly" offered by Condor Airlines

I noticed when trial booking flights on the Condor site that there was no cost to add on many other nearby cities, so I explored more and found out about DB's Rail & Fly. It offers free ongoing travel by rail after arriving in Frankfurt on Condor Airlines to all German cities and even some outside Germany.

Has anyone tried this Rail & Fly option and how does it work? It looks like you get unlimited rail travel (stop as you like) to the destination you chose (or maybe any direction?) for the day of arrival in Frankfurt and then the whole next day? And it's free for regional trains, which I know from experience can be very quick in Germany, or can be upgraded to ICE for 10 euros per train?

For example: Could a person train to Nuremberg the day of arrival, spend the night, then train to Cheb, Czech R (a DB train to just over the border) the next day at no extra charge?

As I read it, it includes most ICEs. The 10€ upgrade (in 2nd class) is to an ICE Sprinter, which are rare trains, and they dropped the extra reservation fee a year or so ago, so maybe the 10€ would no longer apply. The ICE Sprinter of which I am aware runs non-stop between Frankfurt and Berllin twice daily (morning and evening).

I once called Lufthansa to inquire about Rail & Fly, and they seems to no nothing about it. I got the impression that you have to get it from a travel agent who knows about it.

It seems like a good way to get around the specific train requirement of the advance purchase, Savings Fare tickets for use right after arrival by air.

I see that you're probably right about the no extra reservation fees. I wonder how this works through the Condor site since there is no travel agent? What does the email receipt look like that you then carry on the trains, or maybe there's a pass to pick up at a DB office?

This implies that you can select any train but it must be to a major airport? http://www.vielfliegertreff.de/sonstige-europaeische-airlines/99853-condor-und-deutsche-bahn-buchen-nicht-rail-fly.html

Currently looking at an itinerary Karlovy Vary to Prague to Krakow to L'viv overland and then L'viv to Berlin by Ryanair. Using the free 2 day rail pass on either end gets me to and from FRA easily and for free.

Rail&Fly is valid to/from any German airport and Salzburg and Basel; some airlines offer Zürich, Amsterdam and Brussels as well. It's valid on any train category and not train specific (and there's no supplement for the ICE) and it's valid from the day of your arrivel till next day. You can either use the print home option or pick up your ticket at any ticket machine using the pick up number communicated to you. It's not available at a DB ticket counter. You have to use the direct route, no zigzagging.

Edit: according to the Condor website, the Rail&Fly option is not free (other airlines may have different policies) but costs €29. You will be emailed a pick up # which you can print your ticket with or pick up it at any ticket machine. A list fo participating airlines (Ryan Air doesn't) is on this DB website.

I see that that is what the Condor website says, but fake booking either direction is does not charge extra for the train. I'm going all the way to the credit card entry page.

I'm going all the way to the credit card entry page.

Why does it take you to a credit card entry page if there is no charge?

There's no extra charge for the train trip over the charge for the flight to FRA.

Apologies for resurrecting this thread but I'm also wondering about this "Rail & Fly" option on Condor too. We plan to fly into Frankfurt in May and would like to take that super-fast 4-hour DB train to Berlin. With this "Rail & Fly" purchase, does it mean that we can just show up at the train platform and not have to reserve with Deutsche Bahn beforehand?

I would not call the connection super fast, but yes, a Rail & Fly ticket is the ticket, no need to exchange it or anything. It does not guarantee you a seat, though (you are allowed to stand, and most of the time, there are seats available). For added peace of mind, you can buy seat reservations separately from DB for 4.50 Euros per direction in second class.

Edited to add: Of course, you must have the Rail&Fly ticket itself; usually, that would be a PDF to print at home, and you should get the link at the end of the booking process.

Thank you chris-s...I was concerned about turning up and not having a designated seat. So, I could go online to the DB website and reserve a seat on a particular train without needing to pay for a normal ticket (since I have 'Rail & Fly')?

You can do that any time here regardless of whether you have already a ticket or not.
